About

Susan Browning (born Susan Brown; February 25, 1941 – April 23, 2006) was an American actress and singer whose Broadway career spanned three decades, from 1963 to 1993. She was born and raised in Baldwin, New York, where she graduated from Baldwin High School in 1958. She went on to attend Penn State University, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta and earned a bachelor's degree in theater arts in 1962. She adopted the surname Browning professionally to distinguish herself from another actress named Susan Brown.

Following her graduation, Browning performed with the Equity Library Theatre, where impresario Julius Monk saw her in a musical production and signed her for a revue called Dime a Dozen at Plaza 9. After a year in that show, she made her Broadway debut in Love and Kisses. Her stage career went on to include productions such as Company, Goodtime Charley, Big River, Shelter, and Sondheim: A Musical Tribute, among others.

Browning received a Theatre World Award in 1970 and earned two Tony Award nominations: one for Best Actress in a Musical for her work in Company in 1971, and another for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Goodtime Charley in 1975. In addition to musicals, she appeared in several Broadway plays during her career.

Beyond the stage, Browning had a presence in film and television. She appeared in the 1992 comedy film Sister Act and its 1993 sequel, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, playing one of the nuns in both productions. Her television credits included Love Is a Many Splendored Thing, Law & Order, All My Children, Mary Hartman Mary Hartman, The Monkees, The Girl From U.N.C.L.E., and The Wild Wild West.

Browning died on April 23, 2006, in New York City following a brief illness. She was 65 years old.
