About

Sue Ane Langdon, born Sue Ane Lookhoff on March 8, 1936, in New Jersey, is an American actress whose career has spanned Broadway, film, and television. Raised in various locations following the death of her father when she was two years old, she attended North Texas Teachers College in Denton, Texas, and was briefly enrolled at Idaho State University. She began her performing career at Radio City Music Hall, where she sang and acted in stage productions.

Langdon's Broadway career ran from 1955 to 1966 and included appearances in Ankles Aweigh and the musical The Apple Tree, the latter of which starred Alan Alda. In 1976, she appeared in Hello Dolly at The Little Theatre on the Square, and in 1978 she performed in Chicago for Kenley Players in Columbus, Ohio.

Her film debut came in The Great Impostor in 1961, opposite Tony Curtis. She went on to appear in The Rounders (1965) alongside Henry Fonda and Glenn Ford, A Fine Madness (1966), Hold On! (1966), and A Man Called Dagger (1967). Two of her films, A Guide for the Married Man (1967) and The Cheyenne Social Club (1970), were both directed by Gene Kelly. In 1966, United Artists released Frankie and Johnny, in which she co-starred with Elvis Presley, Donna Douglas, and Harry Morgan; she had previously appeared with Presley in Roustabout. Her later film credits included The Evictors (1979), Without Warning (1980), Zapped! (1982), UHF (1989), and Zapped Again! (1990).

On television, Langdon became the third actress to play Alice Kramden in Jackie Gleason's The Honeymooners, following Pert Kelton and Audrey Meadows. She shared a Life magazine cover with Gleason in 1962 to promote his return to weekly variety television, though her tenure in the role lasted only four weeks. She appeared as Kitty Marsh during the NBC run of Bachelor Father from 1959 to 1961, and made three separate appearances on Perry Mason: as Rowena Leach in "The Case of the Crying Comedian" (1961), as the murder victim in "The Case of the Scandalous Sculptor" (1964), and as Dorothy Merrill in "The Case of the Avenging Angel" (1966). In 1962, she played nurse Mary Simpson in an episode of The Andy Griffith Show on CBS, and she appeared as a defendant in the Dick Van Dyke Show episode "One Angry Man." Her extensive list of guest appearances included Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Wild Wild West, Mannix, Ironside, McHale's Navy, Hart to Hart, Three's Company, The Love Boat, Happy Days, and Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In, among others.

In 1970, Langdon co-starred in the CBS sitcom Arnie alongside Herschel Bernardi, portraying Lillian, the wife of a loading-dock foreman promoted to a corporate position. The series ran for two seasons, and her performance earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress in Television. She subsequently co-starred in the NBC comedy Grandpa Goes to Washington (1978), playing Rosie Kelley, the daughter-in-law of a maverick senator portrayed by Jack Albertson; the series aired for four months opposite Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley. In 1980, she appeared in the ABC mid-season comedy When the Whistle Blows, playing Darlene Ridgeway, the owner of a saloon, before the program concluded after ten weeks.

Langdon married Jack Emrek, a motion picture, stage, and television director, on April 4, 1959, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The couple remained married until Emrek's death on April 27, 2010, in Calabasas, California.
