About
Stuart Burge (15 January 1918 – 24 January 2002) was an English actor, stage and film director, and producer. Born the son of H. O. Burge and K. M. Haig, he received his education at Eagle House School in Sandhurst and Felsted School in Essex before pursuing formal actor training at the Old Vic from 1936 to 1937 and at Oxford Rep from 1937 to 1938.
Following his training, Burge performed at the Old Vic and in West End theatre during 1938 and 1939. The onset of the Second World War interrupted his career, and he served in the British Army's Intelligence Corps from 1939 to 1945. Upon returning to civilian life, he resumed acting at the Bristol Old Vic, the Young Vic, and in commercial theatre between 1946 and 1949. By 1948 he had also begun working as a director.
Burge's career extended to Broadway, where he appeared in 1952 in Venus Observed. His stage work encompassed productions for both theatre and television, including four film adaptations of plays. Among his stage directing credits was a 1950 production of Twelfth Night for the Old Vic Company and British Council, which toured to the Teatro Comunale Giuseppe Verdi in the Free Territory of Trieste. He also appeared on screen, taking the role of Paolo in the 1953 film The Malta Story.
Burge married Josephine Parker, an American actress, and the couple had five children: Lucy, Stephen, Nicholas, Matthew, and Emma Burge.
