About

Stewart Moss (November 27, 1937 – September 13, 2017) was an American actor, writer, and director born in Chicago, Illinois. His father was of Irish descent, and his mother was the daughter of Italian immigrants. Moss earned a degree from Marquette University in 1959 and subsequently studied at the Yale School of Drama on a one-year scholarship.

His Broadway career began in 1962 with an appearance in Seidman and Son. On screen, Moss made his film debut in the 1965 production In Harm's Way, launching a career that would include roles in Chubasco (1968), Pendulum (1969), Alfred Hitchcock's Topaz (1969), Zig Zag (1970), Fuzz (1972), Stacey (1973), Doctor Death: Seeker of Souls (1973), The Bat People (1974), The Last Married Couple in America (1980), and Raise the Titanic (1980).

Television occupied a significant portion of Moss's career. He made eight guest appearances on Hogan's Heroes between 1965 and 1971, and appeared twice on Perry Mason — first as murder victim David Cartwell in the 1964 episode "The Case of the Paper Bullets," and later as Dan Swanson in the 1966 episode "The Case of the Dead Ringer." He appeared in two episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series, portraying Lt. Joe Tormolen in "The Naked Time" and Hanar in "By Any Other Name." In 1968, he played Hadley Jenkins in The Invaders episode "Inquisition." He appeared twice on Cannon, as Don Woodard in the 1971 episode "Death Chain" and as Ross Vernon in the 1973 episode "Trial by Terror." In 1974, he portrayed Kenneth O'Donnell, a special assistant to President John F. Kennedy, in the docudrama teleplay The Missiles of October. His additional television credits included Wheels, Murder She Wrote, Matlock, Riptide, Cagney and Lacey, Magnum P.I., Barnaby Jones, Baa Baa Black Sheep, The Rockford Files, Kojak, The Silent Force, Hawaii Five-O, and Bonanza.

Beyond performing, Moss worked as a writer and director. He wrote the Trapper John, M.D. episode "Old Man Liver" and directed a stage production of Sweet Charity starring Bebe Neuwirth. His direction of The Shadow Box at Theatre East earned him a Drama-Logue Award. In 2014, he published an autobiography titled My Trek through CreateSpace.

In 1968, Moss married actress Marianne McAndrew; the two later co-starred together in The Bat People. He died in September 2017 at the age of 79.
