About
Steven Pasquale is an American actor born on November 18, 1976, in Hershey, Pennsylvania. He attended Bishop McDevitt High School, a Roman Catholic institution in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and in 1995 became a YoungArts alumnus. He subsequently enrolled as a theatre major at the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University for one semester before relocating to New York to pursue a stage career.
Pasquale's early theatrical work included the role of Sheriff Joe Sutter in The Spitfire Grill, in which he introduced the song "Forest For the Trees," and the lead role of Chris in the 1998 American tour of Miss Saigon. In 2002, he played Robbie Faye in the New York production of A Man of No Importance and portrayed Archibald Craven in the Joey DiPaolo AIDS Foundation's concert of The Secret Garden, a production that also featured Michael Arden, Will Chase, Max von Essen, Celia Keenan-Bolger, and Laura Benanti, whom he later married. He also originated the role of Fabrizio in the Seattle cast of The Light in the Piazza, though scheduling conflicts with the television series Rescue Me prevented him from reprising the role on Broadway.
On Broadway, Pasquale appeared in Reasons to Be Pretty by Neil LaBute in 2009. In 2013, he starred as Robert in The Bridges of Madison County at the Williamstown Theatre Festival opposite Kelli O'Hara, and brought the role to the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on Broadway in early 2014, again with O'Hara. That performance earned him a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Musical. Also in 2013, he appeared in the world premiere of Far from Heaven, a musical by Richard Greenberg and Scott Frankel, portraying Frank Whitaker. His subsequent Broadway credits include the play Junk, American Son — in which he played Scott, a role he also reprised on screen — and a return to Miss Saigon, spanning a Broadway career that extended from 1995 to 2018. His work in a 2024 Broadway production earned him an additional Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Performance in a Musical.
Beyond Broadway, Pasquale received the 2016 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Jamie Lockhart in the Roundabout Theater Company's revival of The Robber Bridegroom. He starred alongside Laura Osnes in Lyric Opera of Chicago's production of Carousel, which closed on May 3, 2015. In 2022, he played Sky Masterson opposite his wife Phillipa Soo as Sarah Brown in the Kennedy Center production of Guys and Dolls, a performance for which he received a Helen Hayes Award nomination.
Pasquale is widely recognized for his television role as firefighter and EMT Sean Garrity on the FX series Rescue Me. He made his television debut on HBO's Six Feet Under, playing a love interest for the character David. Additional television credits include the lead role on NBC's Do No Harm, which premiered on January 31, 2013, the Fox Television Studios pilot Over/Under, which later aired on the USA Network on January 4, 2013, and the miniseries Coma. In 2014, he guest starred in Season 6 of the CBS drama The Good Wife as campaign manager Jonathan Elfman. In 2016, he portrayed Mark Fuhrman in the FX limited series American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson. His film credits include Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem.
In April 2009, PS Classics released Pasquale's debut album, Somethin' Like Love, a jazz record produced by Jessica Molaskey and John Pizzarelli. In 2024, he released the recording "Some Other Time" with Center Stage Records, again featuring Pizzarelli on jazz guitar.
Pasquale has a daughter from a relationship with his high-school sweetheart. He was married to actress and singer Laura Benanti from 2007 to 2013. He became engaged to actress and singer Phillipa Soo in February 2016, and the two married on September 24, 2017. Both Pasquale and Soo practice Transcendental Meditation.
