About

Steve Gravers, born Solomon Gottlieb on April 8, 1922, in New York City, was an American character actor whose career in film, television, and theater spanned from 1952 until his death in 1978. He appeared on Broadway between 1955 and 1969, with credits including A Hatful of Rain and But, Seriously...

A life member of The Actors Studio, Gravers made his Broadway debut in the Studio's production of Michael Gazzo's drama A Hatful of Rain, which opened on November 9, 1955. That same evening, his first featured television appearance aired — a guest role on I Spy, a half-hour anthology series hosted by Raymond Massey in the character of Anton the spymaster, in an episode titled "Bits and Pieces." This I Spy was distinct from the hour-long series of the same name that would premiere roughly a decade later.

Beyond the stage, Gravers built an extensive career in television and film over more than two decades, appearing in numerous productions through 1978. He resided in Studio City, California, where he remained until his death.

Gravers married Vita Marcus in 1958; the marriage ended in 1960, and the couple had no children. He died on August 22, 1978, in Studio City, California, from lung cancer, at the age of 56.
