Steve Colman is an American poet, playwright, producer, and director who appeared on Broadway in 2002 as a co-writer and co-star of Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam, which received a Tony Award.
Before the Broadway production, Colman served as the inaugural poet on the Peabody Award-winning HBO television series Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry Jam. His involvement with the stage adaptation extended beyond performance, as he contributed to the writing of the show alongside its other collaborators. He also co-authored the companion volume Russell Simmons' Def Poetry Jam on Broadway and More, published by Atria Books, as well as Burning Down the House, published by Soft Skull Press.
Colman's theater work includes co-conceiving and assistant directing Bridge and Tunnel, a solo show by Sarah Jones that earned a Tony Award in 2006. The production was originally staged Off-Broadway and produced by Meryl Streep before its Broadway run. His collaborations with Jones were among the projects that contributed to his accumulation of honors in the theater world.
Across his career, Colman's theatrical work has earned two Drama Desk nominations, an Obie Award, and a Theater World Award.
