About

Stephen Russell is an American actor, playwright, and theater director whose career spans stage, film, and video game voice work. He made his Broadway appearance in 2004 in King Lear.

Russell's stage work encompasses a wide range of regional and independent theater productions. He appeared in Huntington's The Last Hurrah and took on roles in The Life of Galileo at Underground Railway Theater, The Bottom of the Lake at Tir Na Theatre, and Daughter of Venus at Boston Playwrights' Theatre. His New Repertory Theatre credits include A Pinter Duet, A House With No Walls, and White People. At Stoneham Theatre he performed in And Then There Were None and A Prayer for Owen Meany, and at The Lyric Stage Company of Boston he appeared in Talley's Folly. Russell also accumulated more than two dozen productions with the Wellfleet Harbor Actors' Theatre, among them The Beauty Queen of Leenane and an Eliott Norton Award-winning production of A New War. He received the 2009 WHAT Award for Sustained Artistic Excellence and has authored thirteen plays for young audiences.

His film career began in 2007 with the role of Bob in Noëlle, followed by the part of Luther Norris in Chatham in 2008. In 2009 he appeared in a minor role in The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past.

Russell is perhaps most widely recognized for his extensive video game voice work. He originated the role of Garrett in the Thief series and additionally voiced Garrett's primary antagonist Karras in Thief II: The Metal Age, along with numerous supporting characters throughout the franchise. He was not involved in the 2014 series reboot, as the production required motion-capture acting that included performers executing their own stunts; Romano Orzari was cast in his place, a decision that prompted an online fan petition seeking Russell's return. In System Shock 2, he provided the voices of the central computer XERXIS and the character William Bedford Diego. His contributions to the Fallout franchise across Fallout 3, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76 include the characters Andy, Mr. Buckingham, The Great One, Wadsworth, Sergeant RL-3, Cerberus, Enclave Scientists, an Enclave Soldier, and every Mr. Handy unit. In Fallout 4 specifically, he voiced both Codsworth and the synth detective Nick Valentine. The 2011 game Skyrim features Russell as Barbas the talking dog, Daedric Prince Clavicus Vile, Belethor, and Thieves Guild leader Mercer Frey. In 2016 he voiced Lord Protector Corvo Attano in Dishonored 2.

Russell has a son named Peter, who works as an actor and musician, and a daughter named Robin, who is a voice actress.
