About
Stephen Root is an American actor born on November 17, 1951, in Sarasota, Florida, to Leona Estelle and Rolland Clair Root, a project superintendent and site manager who oversaw major civil engineering projects across the United States and Mexico. Because his father's work required the family to relocate frequently as each construction project concluded, Root has compared his upbringing to that of an Army brat. He graduated from Vero Beach High School in Vero Beach, Florida, and went on to study at the University of Florida, where he enrolled in the Bachelor of Fine Arts acting program and earned an Associate of Arts degree. He left the university during his final semester to pursue a career in Broadway theater, and the institution later granted him a BFA based on the quality and character of his professional acting work. The University of Florida recognized him as one of its distinguished alumni in 2008.
Root began his stage career in 1980 and made his Broadway debut in Journey's End, playing Second Lieutenant Trotter. His Broadway work continued from 1986 to 1988 and included All My Sons, in which he played Frank Lubey, as well as So Long on Lonely Street and the play Miss Daisy. He later returned to the stage in the 2015 play Marjorie Prime, appearing as Jon.
Root made his feature film debut in 1988 with Crocodile Dundee II, playing a DEA agent, and that same year appeared in the psychological horror film Monkey Shines as Dean Burbage. Early film roles also included a small part as a detective in Ghost (1990) and appearances in both Dave and RoboCop 3 in 1993. He became a recurring collaborator of filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen, appearing in O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000), The Ladykillers (2004), No Country for Old Men (2007), The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018), and The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021). Among his other notable film credits are Bicentennial Man (1999), Dodgeball (2004), Idiocracy (2006), Cedar Rapids (2011), Selma (2014), Trumbo (2015), Get Out (2017), and On the Basis of Sex (2018). Kevin Smith wrote a role specifically for Root in Jersey Girl (2004).
On television, Root gained wide recognition for his portrayal of eccentric billionaire Jimmy James on the NBC sitcom NewsRadio, a role he held from 1995 to 1999. He played the recurring role of Republican campaign consultant Bob Mayer during the final two seasons of The West Wing from 2005 to 2007, and appeared as a series regular on the CBS comedy-western Harts of the West during the 1993–1994 television season. Root also had a regular role on the short-lived CBS series Ladies Man from 1999 to 2000. His guest appearances across television genres have included the role of Klingon Captain K'Vada in the Star Trek: The Next Generation two-part episode "Unification" in 1991, a bank manager in the 1996 Seinfeld episode "The Invitations," and Hawthorne Abendsen in seasons two through four of The Man in the High Castle. He portrayed NASA flight director Chris Kraft in the 1998 miniseries From the Earth to the Moon and took on the biographical role of Richard A. Clarke in The Path to 9/11 in 2006.
Root has maintained a sustained presence across multiple HBO productions. He appeared as vampire Eddie in True Blood, played Gaston Means beginning in season three of Boardwalk Empire in 2012, and appeared as Maynard Barnes in Perry Mason in 2020. From 2021 to 2023, he played Ron Petkus in Succession. His most prominent HBO role came with the dark comedy series Barry, in which he starred as Monroe Fuches beginning in 2018. The performance earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2019, as well as four Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
Root is also an active voice actor. He voiced Bill Dauterive and Buck Strickland on Mike Judge's animated series King of the Hill, which ran from 1997 to 2010 and resumed in 2025. His animated film credits include Ice Age (2002), Ice Age: The Meltdown (2006), Finding Nemo (2003), Finding Dory (2016), and Rango (2011).
Root married his first wife, Laura Joan Hase, in 1984; they have a son named Cody and divorced in August 1997. He married actress Romy Rosemont on December 14, 2008. The two have appeared together in several television productions, including Fringe and Masters of Sex.
