About
Stephanie Caroline March, born July 23, 1974, in Dallas, Texas, is an American actress, activist, and producer. The daughter of John and Laura March, she grew up in the Highland Park area of Dallas, attending McCulloch Middle School and Highland Park High School, where she was a classmate of actress Angie Harmon. Following her parents' divorce, her mother married Robert Derby. March earned a degree from Northwestern University in 1996, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and performed onstage in a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream in Chicago.
March launched her screen career in 1997 with an appearance in an episode of the CBS series Early Edition. Two years later, she relocated to New York and made her Broadway debut in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman, the production starring Brian Dennehy. She subsequently co-starred in the television film adaptation of the play. In 2007, March returned to Broadway in the premiere of Eric Bogosian's Talk Radio, directed alongside star Liev Schreiber. Her Broadway work spans the years 1999 to 2007. During this period she also appeared off-Broadway in Howard Korder's Boy's Life alongside Jason Biggs.
March became widely recognized for portraying Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Cabot on the NBC drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, a role she held as a series regular from 2000 to 2003 and reprised in recurring appearances through 2018. In 2003, she and her SVU castmates received a nomination at the 8th Golden Satellite Awards for the Satellite Award for Best Television Series – Drama. She revisited the character of Cabot, now serving as Bureau Chief ADA of the homicide bureau, in the NBC courtroom drama Conviction, which debuted in spring 2006 and ran for a single thirteen-episode season before cancellation.
Her film work began in 2003 with a supporting role in the political comedy Head of State opposite Chris Rock. Subsequent film appearances include Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005), Falling for Grace (2006), The Treatment (2006), Jesse Stone: Night Passage (2006), and Confessions of a Shopaholic (2009). In 2019, March co-executive produced and starred in The Social Ones, an ensemble mockumentary satirizing social media culture written and directed by Laura Kosann. The film premiered at the Cinequest Film and Creativity Festival on March 9, 2019, at the Hammer Theatre Center in San Jose, California, and won Cinequest's Audience Award for Best Comedy Feature. The production also featured Richard Kind, Jackie Hoffman, Debra Jo Rupp, and Peter Scolari. In 2023, March appeared in Ava DuVernay's biographical drama Origin, playing a character named Binky.
March's television work beyond Law & Order includes the role of Carol Blanton in the Adult Swim miniseries Neon Joe, Werewolf Hunter (2015), a regular cast position on the CBS legal drama Made in Jersey (2012), and guest appearances on 30 Rock, Grey's Anatomy, Rescue Me, and Happy Endings. She portrayed Ivanka Trump in the Comedy Central television movie A President Show Documentary: The Fall of Donald Trump in March 2019. In 2021, she played Debora Green, a former doctor and convicted murderer, in the Lifetime biographical film A House on Fire. The following year she joined the cast of the CW superhero series Naomi as the character Akira, and in 2023 she appeared as Angelica Wyatt in the Amazon Prime miniseries adaptation of Harlan Coben's Shelter. In 2021, March signed with Echo Lake Entertainment for management across all areas of her career.
Outside of performance, March co-founded SheSpoke, a custom-made cosmetics company formerly known as Rouge, with business partner Rebecca Perkins in 2013. She and her husband, Dan Benton, became co-producers of the Broadway musical Redwood in 2025. March is an advocate for international women's rights, with a focus on reproductive rights, access to education, freedom from sexual violence, and fair legal representation.
