About
Stella Adams (April 24, 1883 – September 17, 1961) was an American actress born in Sherman, Texas, whose career spanned Broadway, silent film, and early sound film. She worked across multiple decades and performance mediums, establishing herself particularly in short-form cinema while also maintaining stage credentials in the early years of the twentieth century.
Adams appeared on Broadway between 1900 and 1904, accumulating credits in both musical and non-musical productions. Her stage work during this period included the musical Miss Prinnt, The Mocking Bird, and the musical The Rogers Brothers in Panama.
Her transition into film began with a starring role in the 1909 feature In the Sultan's Power, a production notable for being the first film shot entirely on the west coast of the United States, at a time when the industry remained largely centered in New Jersey and New York. Though Adams appeared in only 12 feature films across her career, she acted in nearly 150 short films during the silent era, most frequently in starring or featured capacities. Early in her film work she concentrated on comedies before expanding into Westerns.
In 1912, Adams joined the Nestor Film Company and relocated to California when the company moved there. She later departed Nestor alongside director Al Christie when he established his own studio. A 1917 article in the trade publication Billboard noted that Adams had left California to join her husband in Chicago, with plans to return to the stage the following year. She was married to press agent James Whittendale.
Two decades elapsed before Adams returned to feature filmmaking, when she appeared in a featured role in Me, Gangster, a silent/sound film directed by Raoul Walsh. Over the subsequent eight years she made ten additional films, though in progressively smaller roles, before retiring in 1936. Adams died in Woodland Hills, California, on September 17, 1961.
