About

Stark Sands is an American actor born on September 30, 1978, in Dallas, Texas. His first name derives from his mother's maiden name, while Bunker — a middle name he carries — was both his late father's middle name and his maternal great-grandmother's maiden name. Sands has a fraternal twin brother named Jacob and an older sister. He attended Highland Park High School before earning a BFA in acting from the University of Southern California in 2001.

Sands began building his screen career in the early 2000s. In 2002, he appeared as Toby, a recurring love interest to Claire Fisher on the HBO drama Six Feet Under, and co-starred in the short film Me and Daphne, directed by Rebecca Gayheart and produced by Brett Ratner, as well as the independent film Pack of Dogs, directed by Ian Kessner. His feature-film debut came in 2003 opposite Natasha Lyonne and Jason Priestley in Die, Mommie, Die!, an adaptation of Charles Busch's play of the same name, in which he played Lance Sussman. He subsequently appeared in Chasing Liberty (2004) with Mandy Moore and Shall We Dance (2004) alongside Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez.

Sands made his Broadway debut in 2007 in the revival of Journey's End, earning both a Theatre World Award and a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play. The following year, from May 2 to June 8, 2008, he performed the role of Alex in A Seagull in the Hamptons at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, New Jersey. That same summer, he appeared in the seven-episode HBO miniseries Generation Kill, portraying Marine Lt. Nathaniel Fick in the dramatization of the 2003 Iraq invasion. The military role echoed an earlier screen credit: he had previously played U.S. Marine Walter Gust in Flags of Our Fathers.

Regional and off-Broadway work during this period included the 2009 musical adaptation of Bonnie & Clyde at the La Jolla Playhouse and a production of The Tempest with the Classic Stage Company, for which he received the Actors' Equity Foundation's St. Clair Bayfield Award, honoring the best performance by an actor in a Shakespearean play in the New York metropolitan area. From June 25 to July 12, 2009, he appeared in Shakespeare in the Park's production of Twelfth Night alongside Anne Hathaway, Audra McDonald, and Raul Esparza.

Sands joined the Broadway cast of American Idiot as Tunny, once again portraying a military figure. He departed the production on March 13, 2011, with David Larsen succeeding him in the role. That same year, on July 9, 2011, Sands married British journalist Gemma Clarke at Bovey Castle, England; the two had met while he was vacationing in London. They have a son born in 2015 and a daughter born in 2018.

In 2013, Sands played Troy Nelson in the Coen Brothers film Inside Llewyn Davis. His most prominent Broadway role to that point came when he originated the character of Charlie Price in Kinky Boots, which opened at the Bank of America Theatre in Chicago in October 2012 before transferring to the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on Broadway, where previews began on March 3, 2013, and opening night was April 4, 2013. The performance earned Sands his second Tony Award nomination, this time for Best Actor in a Musical, though he lost to co-star Billy Porter. He played his final performance in the original run on January 26, 2014. Sands and Porter both returned to Kinky Boots for a limited 15-week engagement beginning September 26, 2017.

Also in 2017, Sands appeared in Steven Spielberg's drama film The Post. His television work continued with the lead role of Dash Parker, a precog, in FOX's Minority Report, which premiered on September 21, 2015. Earlier pilot work included the 2010 HBO pilot The Miraculous Year, which was not picked up, and a role in the CBS series NYC 22, which was canceled after 13 episodes. He was also cast in the NBC pilot Salvation in 2014, which likewise did not proceed to series.

In 2016, Sands played the Templar in Classic Stage Company's off-Broadway production of Nathan the Wise. He was cast in the musical Swept Away as Big Brother in 2019; though originally scheduled to premiere in June 2020, the production was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It ultimately opened at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in Berkeley, California on January 9, 2022, closing on March 13, 2022. Sands reprised the role at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., where previews began November 25, 2023, opening night was December 6, 2023, and the run concluded January 14, 2024. On May 17, 2024, it was announced that Swept Away would transfer to Broadway in the fall of 2024 with Sands and the other principal cast members returning.

Between the two Swept Away engagements, Sands appeared in the North American tryout of & Juliet as William Shakespeare, a production transferring from the West End. The tryout opened at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto on June 22, 2022, and closed August 14, 2022. The show subsequently moved to Broadway's Stephen Sondheim Theatre, with previews beginning October 28, 2022, and opening night on November 17, 2022. Sands played his final performance in that production on August 6, 2023. His Broadway appearances also include the play Julie and To Kill a Mockingbird.
