About

Stanley Charles Ridges (17 July 1890 – 22 April 1951) was an English-born American actor whose career in theatre and film spanned more than three decades, encompassing over 100 stage and screen appearances between 1917 and 1951. Born in Southampton, Hampshire, he became a protégé of musical stage comedian Beatrice Lillie and spent years developing his craft on the stage before making his way to America.

Ridges began his Broadway career as a song-and-dance man before transitioning to dramatic roles, appearing on the New York stage from 1917 through 1935. His stage credits included Maxwell Anderson's Valley Forge, in which he played Lieutenant Colonel Lucifer Tench, and Anderson's Mary of Scotland, where he portrayed Lord Morton. He also appeared in the productions First Lady, Days Without End, and The Mask and the Face, among others, establishing himself as a romantic leading man in the process.

His American film debut came with Success in 1923. A decade later, his screen career gained significant momentum when he appeared alongside Claude Rains in Crime Without Passion (1934). His clear diction and resonant voice allowed him to transition smoothly into sound films. As his hair greyed, Ridges moved away from leading-man parts and into character roles, a shift that produced some of his most notable screen work. In the thriller Black Friday (1940), he played two distinct characters within the same film — the benevolent Professor Kingsley and the violent Red Cannon — a dual performance that demonstrated considerable range. His sole starring role in film came with False Faces (1943).

Among his many supporting performances, Ridges played Major Buxton, Gary Cooper's commanding officer, in Sergeant York (1941); Professor Siletsky in To Be or Not to Be (1942); a Scotland Yard inspector tracking Charles Laughton in The Suspect (1944); and Dr. Cary Travers Grayson, the president's physician, in Wilson (1944). He also appeared in The Scoundrel (1935), If I Were King (1938), The Mad Miss Manton (1938), and No Way Out (1950). In the final period of his career, Ridges began appearing in television anthology programs including Studio One and The Philco Television Playhouse. His last film, the Ginger Rogers comedy The Groom Wore Spurs, in which he played a mobster, was released the month before his death.

Ridges died on 22 April 1951 in Westbrook, Connecticut, at the age of 60.
