About
Isaac Stanford Jolley was born on October 24, 1900, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, and grew up in Morristown. Before pursuing a career in entertainment, he attended high school and worked alongside his father at Jolley Electric and Radio Store. His father also had a stake in a circus. Jolley began his performing career as a vaudevillian in the 1920s, and in 1924 he appeared on Broadway in Seventeen.
After his early stage work, Jolley transitioned to screen acting. He relocated to Hollywood, California, in 1935 and began taking on small roles, including parts in the film Front Page Woman and the 1937 serial Dick Tracy. Over the course of his career, he accumulated credits in more than 400 film and television productions.
Among his notable film appearances was the 1946 serial The Crimson Ghost, in which he played Doctor Blackton and also provided the voice of the title character. His broader filmography included Fighting Bill Carson, Arizona Roundup, Land of the Lawless, Wild Horse Stampede, Fury at Gunsight Pass, The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex, The Whispering Skull, Death Rides the Plains, Calamity Jane and Sam Bass, A Christmas Carol, Murder in the Big House, Midnight Limited, Bad Men of Thunder Gap, Gangsters of the Frontier, Mr. Muggs Rides Again, and Black Arrow, among many others.
Jolley was equally active in television, appearing in series including Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Rawhide, The Rifleman, Maverick, Perry Mason, Wagon Train, The Fugitive, The Big Valley, Death Valley Days, The Virginian, Tales of Wells Fargo, F Troop, Space Patrol, 26 Men, The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp, Trackdown, Man with a Camera, Fury, and The Restless Gun. He also appeared in the Wanted Dead or Alive episode "Chain Gang," which aired on December 10, 1959, playing a character named Charlie Mann. Jolley retired from acting in 1976, with the western television series The Quest serving as his final credit.
He died on December 7, 1978, at the Motion Picture and Television Fund cottages in Woodland Hills, California, at the age of 78, from arteriosclerotic heart disease and heart failure. He was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
