About
St. Clair Bayfield, born John St. Clair Roberts on 2 August 1875 in Cheltenham, England, was a stage actor whose Broadway career spanned from 1902 to 1948. He was the long-term companion and manager of amateur operatic soprano Florence Foster Jenkins. He died on 19 May 1967 in Larchmont, New York.
Bayfield came from a family of notable lineage. His father, George Bayfield Roberts, was an Oxford-educated country parson. His mother, Ida, was the eldest of three illegitimate daughters of Edward Law, 1st Earl of Ellenborough, a politician who served as Governor-General of India in the years preceding the Indian Mutiny. Through his mother's line, Bayfield's maternal great-grandfather held the position of Lord Chief Justice of England.
His path to professional acting began with amateur theatricals, which led him to join a touring company in Australia. A diary he kept during his time in Melbourne is preserved as part of the Bayfield Archive at Lincoln Center in New York. He subsequently worked with a company led by impresario William Ben Greet, whose abandonment of his cast in a remote part of the United States contributed directly to the founding of Actors' Equity, of which Bayfield was a founding member. In the summer of 1914, he rejoined the Ben Greet Players for a revival of Twelfth Night that traveled to 56 Pennsylvania towns over 65 days. Sydney Greenstreet was also a member of that troupe.
His Broadway appearances across several decades included the musical The Prima Donna, the play Hand in Glove, The Night Before Christmas, and Hamlet. His stage work regularly featured productions by British playwrights.
In 1909, Bayfield entered into a common-law relationship with Florence Foster Jenkins, who was seven years his senior. The two lived together for many years in an apartment on 37th Street in Manhattan, and Bayfield managed her career for 36 years until her death in 1944. The following year, in 1945, he married piano teacher Kathleen Weatherley, and the couple settled in Larchmont, New York.
Bayfield's papers from 1898 to 1986 are held by the Billy Rose Theatre Division of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. The Actors' Equity Association honors his legacy through the annual St. Clair Bayfield Award, presented to an actor or actress in a non-featured role in a Shakespearean production. His relationship with Jenkins was depicted in the 2016 biographical film Florence Foster Jenkins, directed by Stephen Frears and premiering in London on 12 April 2016, with Hugh Grant portraying Bayfield and Meryl Streep portraying Jenkins.
