Sophie Brandt

Sophie Brandt, born Sophie Barth on July 4, 1876, in St. Louis, Missouri, was an American actress and soprano who performed in musical comedy, opera, and operetta. Her parents were Felix Barth and Marie Barth, née Brandt, and she had one sister, Elizabeth. She was known in private life as Mrs. William Burlock.

Brandt's performing career encompassed both Broadway productions and earlier stage work. A 1904 magazine noted that she possessed a voice capable of reaching unusually high notes. That same year she appeared in The Princess Chic. Her Broadway career ran from 1908 to 1910, during which she starred in The Gay Musician and A Waltz Dream and appeared in Hans, the Flute Player.

Her first marriage was to Ellsworth Ives Chapman in 1900; Chapman was born on March 10, 1874, in Connecticut, and the marriage did not produce children. Her second marriage, in 1921, was to William Elliot Burlock, a Chicago native born on August 3, 1879. Following that marriage, Brandt settled in Chicago, where her earlier career as an opera performer receded from public attention.

During her lifetime, Brandt represented her birth year as 1892, sixteen years later than her actual birth year of 1876. Some news accounts published at the time of her death in 1946 listed her age as approximately 50. Brandt died in Chicago on February 4, 1946, at the age of 69.
