About
Sophia Anne Caruso is an American actress, singer, and dancer born on July 11, 2001, in Spokane, Washington. She is the youngest of three children born to Steve Caruso, a former club professional golfer, and Deena Caruso, who owned clothing and jewelry stores. Caruso began performing at age seven through the Spokane Children's Theatre, later moving on to productions at Spokane Civic Theatre and Interplayers Professional Theatre.
Caruso made her professional stage debut in 2011, at age nine, playing Helen Keller in Interplayers Professional Theatre's production of The Miracle Worker. Her final Spokane credit was the role of Tina Denmark in Ruthless! The Musical at Interplayers in June 2012, a production that never opened after actor David Gigler collapsed and died during rehearsals. In 2012, Caruso and her family relocated to New York to allow her to pursue acting professionally.
Her New York career began in 2014, when she reprised the role of Tina Denmark in a limited run of Ruthless! The Musical at the Triad Theatre. That same year, she originated the role of Charlotte van Gotheem in Little Dancer at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. In 2015, she appeared in the off-Broadway production of The Nether at MCC Theater, earning a Lucille Lortel nomination for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play. Later that year, she originated the role of Girl in David Bowie's musical Lazarus at New York Theatre Workshop, a credit that appears on the Lazarus Original Broadway Cast Recording released in 2016.
Caruso made her Broadway debut as The Girl in Blackbird at the Belasco Theatre, one of her verified Broadway credits alongside Grey House. She also appeared in the Encores! staged concert production of Runaways at New York City Center. In October 2016, she reprised her role in Lazarus at the King's Cross Theatre in London, receiving a WhatsOnStage Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for the performance.
Her most prominent Broadway credit is the role of Lydia Deetz in the musical Beetlejuice, which she originated in a 2017 workshop before reprising it during the show's tryout at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C. She then starred in the Broadway production beginning in March 2019, a performance that earned her a Theatre World Award in 2019. She departed the production on February 19, 2020, exercising a contractual option to pursue film and television work. The Beetlejuice Original Broadway Cast Recording was released in 2019.
Beyond the stage, Caruso has pursued a recording career and screen work. Her debut single, "Toys," was released on May 22, 2020, produced by Henry Hey, who had served as musical director on Lazarus, and Nick Littlemore of Empire of the Sun. She subsequently released the singles "Goodbye" in February 2021, "Snow & Ice" in July 2022, and "Thing Like That" in 2022. In film, she was cast as Sophie in the Netflix fantasy film The School for Good and Evil, an adaptation of Soman Chainani's book series, released in 2022. In January 2025, it was announced that Caruso had been cast as Miss Goldenweek in the second season of the Netflix series One Piece, based on the manga by Eiichiro Oda.
