About
Sienna Rose Diana Miller was born on 28 December 1981 in New York City and raised in London after her family relocated when she was eighteen months old. Her father, Edwin Miller, worked as a banker before becoming an American dealer in Chinese art. Her mother, Josephine, a British former model born in South Africa to British parents, served as a personal assistant to David Bowie and at one point managed the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York. Miller attended Heathfield School in Ascot, Berkshire. A notable footnote to her birth: her mother went into labor while watching a performance of The Nutcracker in New York, meaning Miller came close to being born in a theatre.
Before establishing herself as an actress, Miller worked as a model, appearing in Italian Vogue and the 2003 Pirelli Calendar. Her screen debut came in the 2001 romantic comedy South Kensington, opposite Rupert Everett and Elle Macpherson. Supporting roles in High Speed and its follow-up The Ride followed in 2002, along with guest appearances in The American Embassy and Bedtime. In 2003, she took on a regular role in the television drama Keen Eddie, playing the combative yet caring flatmate of an NYPD detective — her first sustained exposure to American audiences. FOX cancelled the series after seven episodes.
The year 2004 marked a turning point in Miller's career. She appeared in the crime thriller Layer Cake, directed by Matthew Vaughn and starring Daniel Craig, and in Alfie, a remake of Bill Naughton's 1966 film, in which she played opposite Jude Law. Both films raised her public profile considerably. In 2005, she made her West End debut in a revival of As You Like It at the Wyndhams Theatre, playing Celia, and appeared in the period dramedy Casanova alongside Heath Ledger. She took on the role of 1960s socialite and Andy Warhol's muse Edie Sedgwick in the 2006 biographical drama Factory Girl, and appeared in Matthew Vaughn's Stardust and Steve Buscemi's Interview in 2007. Her performance in the 2008 British biographical drama The Edge of Love, in which she played Caitlin Macnamara, the wife of poet Dylan Thomas, earned her a BIFA nomination for Best Supporting Actress. That same year she also received a BAFTA Rising Star Award nomination.
In 2009, Miller was cast as The Baroness in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, the live-action adaptation of the G.I. Joe franchise, which grossed $302.5 million worldwide despite a mixed critical reception. That same year, she chose to step away from film work and focus on theatre. She starred in Patrick Marber's After Miss Julie on Broadway in 2009, taking on the title role — a credit verified in her Broadway record as Miss Julie. She later returned to Broadway, appearing in Cabaret, with her Broadway career spanning from 2009 to 2014.
Miller's return to screen prominence came with the 2012 television film The Girl, in which she portrayed actress Tippi Hedren. The performance earned her nominations for both the BAFTA Television Award for Best Actress and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film. She subsequently appeared in a succession of notable films, including Foxcatcher and American Sniper, both released in 2014, followed by The Lost City of Z and Live by Night in 2016, and American Woman in 2018. Her television work continued with the miniseries The Loudest Voice in 2019 and Anatomy of a Scandal in 2022.
