About
Sidney Lippman (March 1, 1914 – March 11, 2003) was an American composer and songwriter born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He graduated from the University of Minnesota and later moved to Manhattan, where he studied musical composition for one year at the Juilliard School. During World War II, Lippman served as a merchant seaman.
Lippman built a substantial career in popular music, producing several chart-topping songs across different decades. In 1945, the novelty song "Chickery Chick" reached number one for Sammy Kaye. Four years later, he collaborated with Buddy Kaye and Fred Wise on "'A' - You're Adorable (The Alphabet Song)," which became a number one hit in 1949 through an RCA Victor recording by Perry Como and the Fontane Sisters. His most widely recognized composition, "Too Young," reached number one in 1951 as recorded by Nat King Cole. The lyrics for that song were written by Sylvia Dee, a lyricist who served as a longtime collaborator with Lippman. The two conceived the song after Dee mentioned that her younger brother was getting married, prompting them both to recognize the phrase as a potential title.
Lippman also contributed to Broadway, composing the music for Barefoot Boy with Cheek, which opened in 1947. The production featured lyrics by Sylvia Dee and a book by Max Shulman.
Lippman died on March 11, 2003, at the age of 89, in a nursing home in North Bergen, New Jersey, having previously resided in Fort Lee.
