About

Sid Silvers (January 16, 1901 – August 20, 1976) was a Brooklyn-born actor, comedian, composer, lyricist, and writer whose career spanned vaudeville, Broadway, film, and radio.

Silvers launched his professional career in vaudeville during the early 1920s, working as a comedy partner of Phil Baker. Their act was built around a distinctive premise in which Silvers would heckle Baker from the audience, and the two continued performing together through 1928. That partnership later served as the basis for the 1951 Martin and Lewis film The Stooge.

His Broadway debut came in 1925 in the revue Artists and Models, and he returned to the stage two years later for the revue A Night in Spain. Silvers contributed lyrics to The Song Writer in 1928 and to Pleasure Bound in 1929. He wrote the book for the 1931 musical You Said It, and in 1932 he took on the role of Louie Webb in Take a Chance. He also wrote the music and lyrics for the revue New Faces of 1936.

Silvers entered film with The Show of Shows in 1929 and subsequently appeared in Dancing Sweeties (1930), Bottoms Up (1934), Transatlantic Merry-Go-Round (1934), Broadway Melody of 1936, and Born to Dance (1936), serving as a scriptwriter on the latter two productions. He also contributed special comedy material to MGM productions including The Wizard of Oz (1939). His final film appearance came in 1946 in Mr. Ace, where he played a featured comic role.

During the 1940s, Silvers concentrated his work on stage and radio performance. In the following decade he transitioned to television writing, contributing to The Mickey Rooney Show in the 1950s.
