About
Sid Raymond, born Raymond Silverstein on January 21, 1909, in Manhattan, was an American comedian and character actor whose career spanned several decades in radio, animation, film, commercials, and Broadway. He died on December 1, 2006, in Aventura, Florida, at the age of 97, from complications of a stroke. He was survived by his wife, the former Dorothy Naftel, to whom he had been married for 69 years.
Raymond left New York University without completing his degree and took a position as a recreation director at a Catskills resort. He subsequently worked for the radio program Major Bowes Amateur Hour, traveling across the United States in search of talented performers. During World War II, he entertained military troops, and in 1950 he took on the role of Finnegan in the radio program Duffy's Tavern, returning to the character during the show's final seasons.
In the field of animation, Raymond became widely recognized as the voice of Baby Huey, a role he would reprise in The Baby Huey Show in the 1990s before being replaced by Joe Alaskey in the series' second season. His first cartoon work appeared in the Little Lulu short Lulu's Indoor Outing. He also provided the voice for Katnip the cat in the Herman and Katnip series, a character who additionally appeared in several Buzzy the Crow cartoons. Raymond was among the actors, including Dayton Allen, who voiced the magpies Heckle and Jeckle. His work in animation, film, and commercials continued nearly until his death, and the short documentary Sid at 90 chronicled his life and career.
Raymond's Broadway career extended from 1962 to 1968. He originated from New York, New York, and appeared in two productions during that period: he portrayed Candy Butcher in Something About a Soldier in 1962 and Mr. Diamond in Golden Rainbow in 1968.
