About
Shirley Stoler (March 30, 1929 – February 17, 1999) was an American actress born in Brooklyn, New York, the eldest of four children raised by Russian Jewish immigrant parents who operated a used furniture store. She made her stage debut in 1955 and developed her craft through New York's experimental La Mama and Living Theatre companies, establishing herself as a significant presence in the underground theater world before achieving wider recognition in film.
Stoler's film career gained momentum in 1970, when she was 41 years old, with her role in The Honeymoon Killers. A large and powerfully built actress who rarely smiled onscreen, she became closely associated with villainous and menacing characters across film and television. Among her most acclaimed performances was her portrayal of an unnamed Nazi female prison commandant in Lina Wertmüller's Seven Beauties (1975), in which her character engaged in a predatory dynamic with a concentration camp inmate played by Giancarlo Giannini. The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film of 1976; Wertmüller was nominated for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, and Giannini received a Best Actor nomination. Stoler's work in the film earned her a profile on the front page of the New York Times Arts section.
Beyond those signature roles, Stoler appeared in supporting capacities in Klute, The Deer Hunter, and Desperately Seeking Susan, and made a television appearance in an episode of Charlie's Angels. On daytime television, she played Frankie on The Edge of Night and Roberta, nicknamed Tiny, on One Life to Live. She was also known to Saturday morning audiences as Mrs. Steve on Pee-wee's Playhouse.
Stoler's stage work extended to Broadway, where she appeared in 1981 in Lolita. She lived in Manhattan, where she died on February 17, 1999, at St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center from heart failure following a prolonged illness, at the age of 69.
