About

Shirley J. Mitchell, born November 4, 1919, in Toledo, Ohio, was an American actress whose career spanned radio, film, television, and Broadway. The daughter of Sam Mitchell and Mary Ann Daniels, Jewish emigrants who had fled the Russian Civil War, Mitchell grew up in Toledo alongside her younger brother, Dr. Marvin Mitchell, who later settled in Watertown, Massachusetts. She died on November 11, 2013, at the age of 94, of heart failure.

Mitchell launched her performing career in radio after relocating to Chicago, where she appeared on the network broadcast of The First Nighter Program and took on small parts in soap operas including The Story of Mary Marlin and The Road of Life. A subsequent move to Los Angeles opened further opportunities, among them a role opposite Joan Davis and Jack Haley on The Sealtest Village Store. She became a recognizable presence on several prominent radio programs, playing Louella on The Life of Riley, Alice Darling on Fibber McGee and Molly beginning in 1943, and also appearing on Amos & Andy and The Charlotte Greenwood Show. Her most celebrated radio work came through The Great Gildersleeve, on which she originated the role of the Southern belle Leila Ransom in September 1942, a part that became her signature character in the medium.

In 1954, Mitchell brought her talents to Broadway, appearing in The King and I. That same period overlapped with her television work on I Love Lucy, in which she appeared in three episodes during the show's third season, from 1953 to 1954, as Marion Strong, one of Lucy Ricardo's friends. Following the 2012 death of Doris Singleton, Mitchell became the last surviving recurring adult cast member from that series.

Her television career continued steadily through the following decades. In 1961 she appeared in an episode of The Tab Hunter Show, and in 1962 she joined the sitcom Pete and Gladys, starring Harry Morgan and Cara Williams, playing Janet Colton in 13 episodes, with Peter Leeds cast as her on-screen husband George Colton. Between 1963 and 1965, Mitchell made five appearances on Perry Mason, including the 1965 episode "The Case of the Carefree Coronary," in which she played Marilyn David, the widow of a murder victim, and the 1964 episode "The Case of the Woeful Widower," in which her character, murder victim Elizabeth Bain, was heard but not seen. From 1965 to 1967, she played neighbor Marge Thornton on Please Don't Eat the Daisies. Additional television credits from the era include a 1968 appearance on Petticoat Junction as Cousin Mae and a 1977 appearance on the crime drama The Feather and Father Gang. In the late 1970s she appeared alongside Don Porter in an episode of Three's Company. Mitchell also contributed voice work, including the role of Laurie Holliday on the Hanna-Barbera animated series The Roman Holidays in 1972.

In her personal life, Mitchell became engaged to Dr. Julian H. Frieden by early October 1946, with her engagement shower held at the home of singer Dinah Shore. The two married on November 23, 1946, and by August 1955 had two children, a daughter named Brooke and a son named Scott. Mitchell and Frieden divorced in August 1974. In 1992, she married songwriter Jay Livingston, and the two remained together until his death in 2001.
