About
Shirley Enola Knight was born on July 5, 1936, in Goessel, Kansas, the daughter of Virginia Webster Knight and Noel Johnson Knight, an oil company executive. She grew up in Mitchell and later Lyons, Kansas, where she completed high school. Knight began vocal training as an opera singer at age eleven, and at fourteen published a short story in a national magazine. She subsequently studied at Phillips University and Wichita State University before enrolling at the Pasadena Theatre School, which launched her film career in 1959. She later trained in acting with Jeff Corey, Erwin Piscator, Lee Strasberg, and Uta Hagen at HB Studio, and became a life member of the Actors Studio.
Knight's screen career gained early recognition through two Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress, the first for The Dark at the Top of the Stairs (1960) and the second for Sweet Bird of Youth (1962). Throughout the 1960s she took on leading roles in Hollywood productions including The Couch (1962), House of Women (1962), The Group (1966), The Counterfeit Killer (1968), and The Rain People (1969). Her performance in the British film Dutchman (1966) earned her the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival. In later decades she appeared in supporting roles across a wide range of films, among them Endless Love (1981), As Good as It Gets (1997), Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (2002), and Grandma's Boy (2006).
Television occupied a significant portion of Knight's career. She was cast in 1958 and 1959 as Mrs. Newcomb in twenty of the twenty-nine episodes of the series Buckskin, and as a Warner Brothers Television contract player she appeared in Maverick, Bourbon Street Beat, Sugarfoot, Cheyenne, and The Roaring 20s. Her later television work spanned series including Thirtysomething, Law and Order, ER, House M.D., Cold Case, and Desperate Housewives, among many others. She received eight Primetime Emmy Award nominations and won three: a 1988 Emmy for her guest performance in Thirtysomething, a 1995 Emmy for a guest appearance in the NYPD Blue episode "Large Mouth Bass," and an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie for Indictment: The McMartin Trial, for which she also received the Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.
Knight's Broadway career spanned from 1964 to 1997. Her stage credits include Three Sisters (1964), We Have Always Lived in the Castle (1966), The Watering Place, Kennedy's Children (1975), and The Young Man from Atlanta. Her performance in Kennedy's Children, a play by Robert Patrick, earned her the 1976 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play. She also received Drama Desk Award nominations for Outstanding Actress in a Play for Landscape of the Body and The Young Man from Atlanta, the latter of which brought an additional Tony nomination.
Knight was married to actor and producer Gene Persson from 1959 until 1969; their daughter is actress Kaitlin Hopkins, born February 1, 1964. Her second marriage, to English writer John Hopkins, lasted from 1969 until his death in 1998, and the couple had a daughter, Sophie C. Hopkins. Knight died on April 22, 2020, at age 83, at her daughter Kaitlin's home in San Marcos, Texas, one month after suffering a fall at an assisted living facility.
