About

Shirley Kellogg was an American actress and singer born on 27 May 1887 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Though she began her career in the United States, Kellogg ultimately achieved greater recognition in Britain, where she became a prominent figure in theatrical revue.

Her Broadway career spanned from 1908 to 1912, during which she appeared in several musical productions. She starred in Miss Innocence and took part in The Three Romeos, The Passing Show of 1912, and On the Town. Her American stage work also included an appearance in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1910.

Kellogg's career gained considerable momentum after she transitioned to the British stage, where she became closely associated with the London Hippodrome. In 1912 she appeared in Hullo Ragtime! at that venue, and the following year she was seen in Are You There? at the Prince of Wales's Theatre and in Hullo Tango! In June 1913 she married theatrical and film director Albert de Courville. Her London Hippodrome appearances continued with Push and Go in 1915 and Zig-Zag! in 1917. She also appeared in Cheating Cheaters at the Strand Theatre in 1918 and Joy Bells at the London Hippodrome in 1919.

In 1917, Kellogg was filmed in connection with the introduction of the motor scooter to England. Between 1921 and 1924 she owned Little Grove, a Georgian house in East Barnet, on which she reportedly spent £10,000 in restoration work. The property was referred to as Shirley Grove during the period of her ownership. In 1924, Kellogg was granted a divorce from de Courville. That same year she traveled to Hollywood to pursue a career in silent films.
