About

Shirley Dale, born Marian Beatrice Baxendale on 2 September 1904 in Fiji, was a British actress who performed on stage, film, and television across multiple countries before her death on 23 February 1988 in New Haven, Connecticut. Her father, Francis Baxendale, served in the British Colonial Service and was also an amateur ornithologist; her mother was his second wife, Edith Fremlin Baxendale. Dale grew up in Cyprus and later trained at the Royal College of Music in London.

Her stage career began with a review at the Lyric Theatre, where she played Jenny Diver in The Beggar's Opera. She went on to take on a range of classical and operatic roles, including Viola in Twelfth Night, Titania in A Midsummer Night's Dream, Raina in Arms and the Man, Imogen in Tantivy Towers, and Mélisande in Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande. Her film debut came in The Beggar Student, in which she played the role of Tania.

In 1932, Dale relocated to Australia, where she worked with the J. C. Williamson's company. She appeared in the Australian musical comedy film The Hayseeds (1933), portraying Mary Townleigh, and performed in the stage musicals Music in the Air and Waltzes from Vienna. She married fellow actor John S. Moore in 1935, and the couple subsequently moved to New York.

Dale made her Broadway appearance in 1938 in Knights of Song, a musical by Oscar Hammerstein II centered on the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, which played at the 51st Street Theatre. Her television work included an appearance in "The Stolen Prince" (1949), an episode of Academy Theatre, and "Doctor Serocold" (1952), the second episode of the Hallmark Hall of Fame.

In 1953, Dale and Moore settled in Bellmore, New York, where they opened Fairmeadow Nursery. The couple retired to Southbury, Connecticut in 1978.
