About

Shepperd Strudwick (September 22, 1907 – January 15, 1983) was an American actor whose career spanned film, television, radio, and stage across more than five decades. Born in Hillsborough, North Carolina, he attended Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, Virginia, before enrolling at the University of North Carolina, where he competed in football, basketball, and track. His earliest performing experience came through a summer stock theatre company in Maine, where he also met Helen Wynn, born Helen R. Sims, whom he married on May 10, 1936, in New York City. The couple had a son in 1944. Strudwick later married Jean Mead, who had worked for the British Information Service, in 1949, and subsequently married Mary Jeffrey in 1977, remaining with her until his death.

Strudwick's Broadway career began in 1929 with The Yellow Jacket and extended through at least 30 productions over more than five decades, concluding with To Grandmother's House We Go in 1981. Among his stage credits were The Eccentricities of a Nightingale, The Desert Song, and Galileo. For his performance in To Grandmother's House We Go, he received a 1981 Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Featured Role in a Play. He also appeared under the billing John Shepperd for certain stage and film work throughout his career.

His film work began with the short Joaquin Murrieta in 1938, in which he played the title character. He portrayed Edgar Allan Poe in The Loves of Edgar Allan Poe (1942) and appeared as Yugoslav guerrilla leader Lt. Aleksa Petrovic in the 20th Century Fox war film Chetniks! The Fighting Guerrillas (1943). Among his most recognized screen roles was Adam Stanton, the idealistic doctor who kills Willie Stark in All the King's Men (1949), alongside Broderick Crawford. That same year he appeared in The Reckless Moment and The Red Pony. Additional film credits include Father Jean Massieu opposite Ingrid Bergman in Joan of Arc (1948), Fighter Squadron (1948), Under the Gun (1951), and A Place in the Sun (1951), in which he played the father of Elizabeth Taylor's character. His final film appearance came in the 1981 television film Kent State. During World War II, Strudwick served in the United States Navy.

Television work occupied a significant portion of his career. He played Dr. Charles Morris in the 1958 Perry Mason episode "The Case of the Fugitive Nurse" and appeared in The Twilight Zone episode "Nightmare as a Child." He held recurring roles on multiple soap operas, including Dr. Fields on As the World Turns, Jim Matthews on Another World, Victor Lord on One Life to Live, and Timothy McCauley on Love of Life. In 1981, he provided the voice of Homer for the National Radio Theater's radio dramatization of the Odyssey, a production that received a Peabody Award.

Strudwick died of cancer in New York City on January 15, 1983, at the age of 75.
