About

Sheldon Lewis was an American actor born on April 20, 1868, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He built a career spanning both the Broadway stage and the silent film era, becoming particularly recognized for his antagonistic screen roles.

Lewis established his theatrical presence in New York between 1907 and 1914, appearing in a range of productions. His Broadway credits included A Thousand Years Ago, The Thunderbolt, The Learned Ladies, The Lady from the Sea, and Lola. As his stage career wound down, Lewis transitioned into film work, ultimately appearing in more than 90 productions between 1914 and 1936.

On April 24, 1911, Lewis married actress Virginia Pearson. The marriage ended in divorce in 1928, with Pearson citing jealousy, ill temper, and abuse in an Associated Press report at the time. Despite the legal dissolution of their union, the two remained constant companions for the rest of their lives, according to Pearson's obituary in The New York Times, which noted that the divorce had been pursued in part because marriage was known to diminish a female film star's box-office appeal during that period.

Lewis died on May 7, 1958, in Los Angeles and was interred at Pierce Brothers Valhalla Memorial Park.
