About

Sheila Phyllis Bond, born Berman on March 16, 1927, in New York City, was an American actress and singer of Jewish descent who built a career on Broadway spanning more than three decades, from 1943 to 1975. She received her early education at the Professional Children's School in New York City and became a professional dancer in the early 1940s.

Bond made her Broadway debut in 1943 as a dancer in Artists and Models, launching a stage career that would include a wide range of productions. She went on to appear in the musical Allah Be Praised!, the play Street Scene, and the melodrama Deadfall, as well as the revue Make Mine Manhattan in 1948. Her most celebrated stage role came in the original Broadway production of Wish You Were Here, in which she played Fay Fromkin. That performance earned her the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical in 1953.

Beyond the stage, Bond established a presence in both film and television. Her film work included a role in The Marrying Kind in 1952, in which she played the sister of Judy Holliday, an actress she was said to resemble. Her television appearances were extensive and included The Ed Sullivan Show, The Colgate Comedy Hour, The Texaco Star Theatre Starring Milton Berle, Four Star Revue, Frankie Laine Time, Playhouse 90, Appointment with Adventure, The Arthur Murray Party, The Saturday Night Revue with Jack Carter, and ABC Album. She also served as the main dancer on Inside U.S.A. with Chevrolet, a role that brought her additional visibility when Life magazine featured her in an article about the program.

Bond was born Sheila Berman and married broker Leo Coff on March 20, 1948. She was later divorced from Barton L. Goldberg, with whom she had two children, Brad Goldberg and Lori Yarom, and five grandchildren. Her sister Francine was married to singer Don Cherry. In her later years, Bond divided her time between New York City and Boca Raton, Florida, before retiring from show business. She died at her Manhattan home on March 25, 2017, at the age of 90.
