About
Shawn Ku is an American Broadway performer, choreographer, and film director whose career has spanned stage and screen. Before entering the entertainment industry, Ku studied chemistry as a pre-medical major at Harvard University and received an acceptance to Columbia Medical School.
Ku performed on Broadway between 1991 and 1999, appearing in productions including Miss Saigon, The King and I, La Cage aux Folles, and Fosse. Alongside his stage work, he also acted in an independent feature-length film.
His screen career extended into choreography and directing. Ku served as choreographer on Making Tracks in 2002 and on The American Mall in 2008, the latter of which he also directed. His earlier film work includes acting in Samsara in 2001 and writing and directing Pretty Dead Girl in 2004. He went on to direct A Score to Settle in 2019.
Ku wrote and directed the 2010 film Beautiful Boy, drawing on his family's personal connection to the Virginia Tech shooting as well as the unexpected death of a visiting friend as source material for the project.
