About
Seth Stewart is an American actor, singer, and dancer from Kent, Ohio, of mixed ancestry. As a child he played football and wrestled, though he was drawn to performance from an early age. He began studying dance at age ten at the James Dance and Performing Arts Center in Howland, Ohio, and later trained with Inna Stabrova and Dmitri Tuboltsev at the Ohio Youth Ballet. After graduating from Theodore Roosevelt High School in 2002, he enrolled in the Fordham University and Alvin Ailey School BFA program, which he left before completing his degree, and also attended The Ailey School of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater for a year and a half.
Stewart's Broadway career spans 2005 to 2015 and includes three productions: Sweet Charity, In the Heights, and Hamilton. He originated the role of Graffiti Pete in In the Heights, first appearing in the show's Off-Broadway run at 37 Arts, which began previews in January 2007. A reviewer for The New York Times singled him out in that production, writing that he "seems to have little springboards in his sneakers." Stewart joined the Broadway production when it opened on February 14, 2008, remaining with it until August 25, 2009, and then returned for a four-week engagement running from June 7 to July 3, 2010. He also made a cameo appearance in the 2021 film adaptation of In the Heights.
In Hamilton, Stewart was a member of the ensemble and served as understudy to Daveed Diggs for the roles of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson. In September 2016 he assumed both roles on a permanent basis, holding them until April 2017, when he was succeeded by James Monroe Iglehart.
Beyond the stage, Stewart has appeared in several films, including Music and Lyrics (2007), Britney: For the Record (2008), and Friends with Benefits (2011). He has also toured with Jennifer Lopez and Madonna, appeared in Paula DeAnda's music video "Walk Away (Remember Me)," and has been associated with Jay Z. In 2014, Stewart was inducted into the Kent City Schools Hall of Fame. In 2025 he self-published a memoir titled Follow Your Vision, Live Your Truth through PublishDrive.
