About
Sean McCourt is an American actor and television producer born on January 19, 1971, in Detroit, Michigan. His Broadway career spans from 1997 to 2010 and includes credits in Titanic, It Ain't Nothin' But the Blues, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Wicked, and Mary Poppins.
Among his most substantial stage commitments was his tenure with the original Broadway cast of Wicked, which began previews on October 8, 2003, and opened officially on October 30, 2003, at the Gershwin Theatre. McCourt originated the roles of the Witch's Father and the Ozian Official while also serving as understudy for the Wizard and Doctor Dillamond. In the summer of 2004, he stepped into the role of the Wizard, replacing Joel Grey. On July 26, 2005, he assumed the lead role of Doctor Dillamond, taking over from William Youmans, and remained with the production until August 6, 2006, nearly three years after joining the company. McCourt later returned to Wicked for a brief period in February and March 2012, reprising his original roles and understudy tracks while covering for cast member Michael DeVries, and returned again in May 2013 in the same capacity.
Prior to his Wicked run, McCourt appeared in the 2001 Off-Broadway production of Bat Boy: The Musical, playing the drunk, psychopathic Dr. Thomas Parker in the original cast alongside Deven May, Kaitlin Hopkins, and Kerry Butler. He is also the co-creator of Behind the Emerald Curtain, a behind-the-scenes tour of Wicked.
On television, McCourt has appeared in All My Children, Ed, Sesame Street, and multiple episodes of Law & Order. Around 2010, he transitioned into television production, producing and directing Garbage Moguls for NatGeo and The Bait for Discovery. He has produced five seasons of Barnwood Builders on the DIY Network, on which he also serves as narrator and executive producer.
McCourt and his wife, Beth Thompson, reside in South Orange, New Jersey, and have two daughters, Clara and Charlotte.
