About
Saundra Santiago is an American actress born on April 13, 1957, in the South Bronx, New York City, to a Cuban father and a Puerto Rican mother. She attended Our Lady of Victory Grammar School before her family relocated to Homestead, Florida, when she was 13. Santiago completed her secondary education at South Dade Senior High School and went on to the University of Miami on a scholarship, where she majored in psychology before developing an interest in acting. She later pursued postgraduate training in theater and arts at Southern Methodist University, earning a Master of Fine Arts degree. Early in her career, she performed with Timber Lake Playhouse, a regional summer stock theater in Mount Carroll, Illinois, taking on multiple roles including Maria in West Side Story during the 1980 season.
Santiago's Broadway career spanned from 1983 to 2003 and included appearances in Nine, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, and A View From the Bridge. Her stage work ran alongside a substantial screen career that began in 1984 with her feature film debut in the dance drama Beat Street. That same year, she joined the cast of the NBC crime drama Miami Vice, portraying Detective Gina Calabrese opposite Don Johnson for five seasons, from 1984 to 1990. The role became the performance most closely associated with her name. During the 1990s, she appeared in several television films, including The Cosby Mysteries in 1994 and To Sir, with Love II in 1996, the latter opposite Sidney Poitier. She also guest-starred on Law & Order in the 1992 episode "Prince of Darkness."
In 1999, Santiago joined the CBS daytime drama Guiding Light as Carmen Santos, a crime boss, a role for which she received a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for America's Favorite Villain in 2002. She remained with the series for three years. Simultaneously, she appeared on The Sopranos in the recurring roles of next-door neighbor Jeannie Cusamano and her twin sister Joan, a run that extended from 1999 to 2007. Following her departure from Guiding Light, she joined the ABC soap opera One Life to Live in 2004 as Isabella Santi/Angelina Parades. In 2007, she took on a recurring role in the first season of the FX legal thriller Damages. Santiago returned to One Life to Live in 2009, this time assuming the role of Carlotta Vega, which she held until 2011.
In 2014, Santiago appeared in the Fox drama series Gang Related, playing Marciela Acosta, the wife of gang leader Javier Acosta. She has also guest-starred on Person of Interest, True Detective, Gotham, Blue Bloods, and Madam Secretary, as well as in the 2004 Law & Order episode "Veteran's Day." In her personal life, Santiago met jazz musician Roger Squitero in 1994 and married him in 1999.
