About

Sarah Grace Stiles, born June 20, 1979, in Massachusetts, is an American actress and singer whose Broadway career spans from 2003 to 2019. Raised in Strafford, New Hampshire, she attended Strafford Elementary School before continuing her education at Coe-Brown Northwood Academy. Her involvement with theater began at age 12 through productions in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where her first role was the title character in Annie at the Seacoast Repertory Theater. During her teenage years she also took on the roles of Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz and Cinderella in Cinderella, and spent summers working at the Prescott Park Arts Festival in Portsmouth. She later trained at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City before pursuing a professional career.

Stiles built an early foundation in Off-Broadway work, most notably through Avenue Q, in which she performed the dual roles of Kate Monster and Lucy the Slut, two puppet characters she controlled throughout the production. Her Broadway credits include The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, Hand to God, and Tootsie, among other productions. She also played Little Red Riding Hood in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Into the Woods at the Delacorte Theater as part of Shakespeare in the Park, appearing alongside Academy Award nominee Amy Adams and Tony Award winners Donna Murphy and Denis O'Hare.

Her role of Joanne in Vanities, a project she had been involved with for two years, originated at the Pasadena Playhouse in California before transferring to Second Stage in New York. That production also led to her participation in a cast album recording. Stiles has contributed to two additional album recordings: the role of Nazirah in The Road to Qatar, and the Spider in the musical adaptation of Roald Dahl's James and the Giant Peach. In 2016 she collaborated with Gary Lucas on Gary Lucas' Fleischerei: Music from Max Fleischer Cartoons, and in 2020 she released her debut EP, You Can Ukulele With Me, which showcases her ukulele playing.

Stiles received a Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play in 2015 for her work in Hand to God, and a second Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical in 2019 for Tootsie. The Tootsie production began its run at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago from September 11 to October 14, 2018, before opening on Broadway in April 2019.

Beyond the stage, Stiles voiced the character Spinel in Steven Universe: The Movie in 2019 and reprised the role in Steven Universe Future in 2020. She appeared in the Epix television series Get Shorty beginning in 2017, and in the third season her character Gladys Parrish, a singer and actress, was written into the show's plot as a cast member of the Broadway musical Tootsie, allowing Stiles to recreate one of her numbers from the stage production on screen. She also appeared in the 2018 film Unsane and joined the Showtime series Billions in a recurring role as Axe Capital stock trader Bonnie Barella, a part she held from seasons three through six. She can additionally be heard as the character Emma Olivia in As the Curtain Rises, an original Broadway soap opera produced by the Broadway Podcast Network.
