About

Sarah Ruth Snook is an Australian actress born on 1 December 1987 in Adelaide, South Australia, who grew up in the suburb of Eden Hills. Her father worked as a swimming-pool salesman and her mother as an aged care provider; the two divorced while Snook was young. She has two older sisters. Snook attended St John's Grammar School in Belair before winning a drama scholarship to Scotch College in Torrens Park. Her first paying job was performing as a fairy at children's birthday parties. She graduated from Sydney's National Institute of Dramatic Art in 2008, and while studying there performed in stage productions of Macbeth and Gallipoli.

Following her graduation, Snook appeared in King Lear with the State Theatre Company of South Australia in 2009. She built her early screen profile through a series of Australian films, earning AACTA Awards for her performances in Sisters of War (2010) and Predestination (2014), and drawing further attention for roles in Not Suitable for Children (2012), These Final Hours (2013), and the supernatural horror film Jessabelle (2014). In 2015 she portrayed Andrea Cunningham in Danny Boyle's biopic Steve Jobs, alongside Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet, and appeared in Jocelyn Moorhouse's period drama The Dressmaker, also starring Winslet and Judy Davis, receiving an AACTA Award nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. She appeared in the biopic The Glass Castle (2017), starring Brie Larson and based on the 2005 memoir of the same name. That same year she appeared in the Netflix science fiction anthology series Black Mirror in the episode "Men Against Fire," alongside Malachi Kirby, Madeline Brewer, and Michael Kelly.

Snook made her West End debut in 2016 playing Hilde Wangel opposite Ralph Fiennes in a revival of Henrik Ibsen's The Master Builder at the Old Vic. She returned to the stage in 2018 to portray Joan of Arc in the Sydney Theatre Company's production of George Bernard Shaw's Saint Joan. From 2018 to 2023, she starred as Siobhan "Shiv" Roy in the HBO drama series Succession, a role that brought her widespread recognition and numerous accolades, including the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, two Golden Globe Awards — first for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Miniseries or Television Film, then for Best Actress in a Television Series Drama — and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. During this period she also appeared in the comedy film An American Pickle (2020) opposite Seth Rogen, and in Kornél Mundruczó's marital drama Pieces of a Woman (2020). She replaced Elisabeth Moss as the lead in the horror-thriller Run Rabbit Run, directed by Daina Reid, and was cast alongside Zach Galifianakis and Elizabeth Banks in the comedy drama The Beanie Bubble (2022), co-directed by Kristin Gore and Damian Kulash. In 2022 she also narrated the Netflix documentary film Kangaroo Valley.

In 2024, Snook returned to the stage in the Sydney Theatre Company's production of The Picture of Dorian Gray at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London's West End, performing all 26 roles in the production. The play transferred to Broadway's Music Box Theatre in 2025, marking her Broadway debut. Her performance earned her the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress as well as the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play (2025), a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lead Performance in a Play (2025), and a Theatre World Award (2025). Also in 2024, Snook voiced the protagonist Grace in Adam Elliot's stop-motion animated film Memoir of a Snail, for which she received her second AACTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role — the first time that award was given for a voice performance. The film received a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the 97th Academy Awards. In 2025, Snook starred in and served as executive producer on the Peacock limited series All Her Fault, which earned her two additional AACTA Awards. Her career accolades in total include six AACTA Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, a Tony Award, two Golden Globe Awards, and two Actor Awards.
