About

Sarah Jane Hyland is an American actress and singer born on November 24, 1990, in the East Village of Lower Manhattan. The daughter of actors Melissa Canaday and Edward James Hyland, and the sister of actor Ian Hyland, Hyland grew up in New York City and trained at the Professional Performing Arts School in Manhattan.

Hyland began her acting career in childhood, first appearing as Howard Stern's daughter in the 1997 film Private Parts. She subsequently played Molly in the 1999 television film Annie and later appeared as Maddie Healy on the NBC series Lipstick Jungle. Her early film work also included a role in Blind Date (2007). Hyland made her Broadway debut in 2006, playing the young Jacqueline Bouvier in Grey Gardens, a production that ran through 2007.

Her most prominent television role came in 2009, when she was cast as Haley Dunphy in the ABC sitcom Modern Family. She held that role for eleven seasons, through 2020. She and the ensemble cast received the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series each year from 2011 through 2014, and Hyland individually earned a Critics' Choice Television Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. From August 2022 through 2023, she hosted Love Island USA on Peacock, and in November 2022 she appeared in Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin, also on Peacock.

Throughout the 2010s, Hyland appeared in a range of film projects, including Geek Charming (2011), Struck by Lightning (2012), Scary Movie 5 (2013), Vampire Academy (2014), See You in Valhalla (2015), XOXO (2016), Dirty Dancing (2017), and The Wedding Year (2019). In 2011, she co-starred in the Disney Channel Original Movie Geek Charming, and in 2014 and 2018 she co-hosted the Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade, which included dancing and singing with Jordan Fisher.

As a singer, Hyland collaborated with Boyce Avenue in 2016 on covers of "Closer" by The Chainsmokers and "Don't Wanna Know" by Maroon 5, both included on the Boyce Avenue album Cover Sessions Vol. 4, released December 19, 2017. The cover of "Don't Wanna Know" peaked at number 62 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 in December 2016. She also performed "Met At a Party" with Jordan McGraw, son of Dr. Phil, at the 2019 Teen Choice Awards; the single was released on August 9, 2019, via Republic Records. Additional musical and theatrical work includes the Kerrigan-Lowdermilk Live concert in 2013, a 2014 Hollywood Bowl adaptation of Hair, and The Unauthorized Musical Parody of Scream at Rockwell Table and Stage in 2014.

Hyland returned to the stage in an Off-Broadway capacity from May 28 to September 29, 2024, playing Audrey in a revival of Little Shop of Horrors opposite Andrew Barth Feldman as Seymour. She returned to Broadway on February 10, 2025, appearing in The Great Gatsby as Daisy opposite Ryan McCartan in the title role. Later in 2025, she is set to join Just in Time, replacing Gracie Lawrence as Connie Francis in the production starring Jonathan Groff.

Outside of performance, Hyland became co-founder and creative director of Sourse, a line of chocolate-infused vitamins, in October 2021. She has also partnered with brands including Olay and appeared in commercials for Olive Garden and Taco Bell.

Hyland was diagnosed with kidney dysplasia as a child and received a kidney transplant from her father in April 2012. After that kidney failed, she underwent a second transplant in September 2017, with her younger brother Ian serving as the donor. She takes ongoing anti-rejection medications and steroids, which have contributed to difficulties maintaining weight and muscle mass and have required periods of bed rest. In a December 2018 article in Self magazine, Hyland disclosed that she had contemplated suicide, attributing the feelings to a sense of being a burden on her family. Since birth, she has undergone 16 surgeries, including kidney procedures and a laparoscopic surgery to treat endometriosis.

In her personal life, Hyland began a relationship with radio personality and television personality Wells Adams in 2017. The couple became engaged in July 2019 and married at a California vineyard on August 20, 2022, with several of her Modern Family co-stars in attendance.
