About

Santos Edward Ortega (June 30, 1899 – April 10, 1976) was an American actor whose career spanned Broadway, radio, television, and film across five decades. Born in New York City to Rafael Ortega, a cigar maker of Spanish descent, and Isabella Ortega, née Corbett, of Irish heritage, Ortega grew up in a household that reflected his mixed ethnic background. He briefly pursued a religious vocation, studying at St. Joseph's Seminary of the De La Salle Christian Brothers in Pocantico Hills, New York, before abandoning that path in favor of acting.

Ortega's stage career began when he was 17 with a performance at the old Hippodrome Theater, followed by a touring engagement with a singing group. He subsequently returned to New York City and appeared on Broadway between 1926 and 1946. His verified Broadway credits include What's the Use (1926), What Never Dies (1926–1927), Puppets of Passion (1927), Marilyn's Affairs, and Jeb (1946).

Radio became the dominant medium of Ortega's professional life. His entry into the field came through a comedy variety program, Blackstone Plantation, where he played a character named Don Rodrigo. A casting director had selected him based on his name alone, assuming his ethnic background made him suitable for the role. Although Ortega had Latino heritage on his father's side, he did not speak Spanish, but he recognized that mastering a convincing Spanish dialect would expand his opportunities, and he developed one accordingly. He also served as straight man on a song-and-patter show featuring Frank Crumit and Julius Sanderson. Among his most prominent radio roles was Commissioner Weston on The Shadow. He played the title character in Bulldog Drummond from 1942 to 1943 and starred in The Adventures of Nero Wolfe from 1943 to 1944. He narrated both Gang Busters and Stroke of Fate, and originated the role of Inspector Queen on The Adventures of Ellery Queen. His daytime serial work included Valiant Lady, in which he played Edward Curran, as well as Perry Mason and Roger Kilgore, Public Defender in 1948. He portrayed the title character in The Adventures of Charlie Chan from 1947 to 1948, appeared in The Affairs of Peter Salem from 1949 to 1953, and was heard in Hannibal Cobb from 1950 to 1951. From the 1930s into the early 1960s, Ortega also contributed to numerous dramatic anthology and genre series, among them Inner Sanctum, Suspense, The Mysterious Traveler, Casey Crime Photographer, The Eternal Light, The Columbia Workshop, The Big Story, You Are There, Dimension X, and X Minus One.

On television, Ortega became best known for playing Will Hughes — commonly referred to as Grandpa — on the CBS daytime serial As the World Turns. He assumed the role on June 21, 1956, succeeding Will Lee, who had originated the part on April 2, 1956, and held it through May 31, 1956. Ortega remained with the series for the rest of his life. On November 22, 1963, he was performing a live scene opposite actress Helen Wagner when CBS interrupted the broadcast with its first bulletin reporting the assassination of President Kennedy; the cast, still in the middle of the episode, had not yet been informed of the event. In film, Ortega appeared in character roles in The Family Secret (1951) and Crowded Paradise (1956).

In his personal life, Ortega married Evelyn Fairbank in 1926; the marriage produced no children and ended in divorce. He later married Cynthia Beckett, who was approximately twenty years his junior, when he was around fifty years old. They had two children together. Ortega was a lifelong tobacco user, frequently smoking cigars during his radio work, though he was more often seen with a pipe during his years on As the World Turns. He died on April 10, 1976, at Broward General Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at the age of 76. Survivors included a son, a daughter, and a sister. A memorial service was held on April 25, 1976, at the Church of the Heavenly Rest in New York City.
