About

Sandra Caldwell is an American actress, singer, and writer born in Washington, D.C. As a teenager she repeatedly traveled to New York to see Broadway productions, and by the age of 18 had determined that performing in stage shows was her primary ambition. In her early twenties she transitioned to presenting publicly as a woman, receiving gender-affirming hormone therapy with the support of her mother and a small circle of friends. She later described the experience as bringing her both joy and relief.

Caldwell pursued her goal of becoming a showgirl by traveling to Europe, where she performed at the Moulin Rouge. After returning to North America she settled in Toronto, Canada, and began building a screen career. Her first credited television appearance came in 1988 in an episode of T. and T., in which she played a character identified as "Mother." Through the 1990s she accumulated a range of film and television roles, including a receptionist in the 1993 film Life with Mikey, Mrs. Wallace in the 1997 film Murder at 1600, and Paulette Mercer in the 1998 film Blind Faith. In 1999 she appeared in Love Songs opposite Louis Gossett Jr., an Academy Award-winning actor, in a scene noted for its significance as a pioneering moment for trans representation on screen. She also appeared in Disney's The Cheetah Girls and in the film Shall We Dance.

Her most sustained screen role came in 1998 when she was cast as Asia Franklin in the television series Little Men, based on Louisa May Alcott's sequel to Little Women. The series ran for two seasons and aired on CTV and PAX TV. In 2015 she appeared in the television special The Book of Negroes.

On stage, Caldwell was a member of the original Broadway company of Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, which opened in 1990. Her theater work also included a production of Anything That Moves in 2001 and a 1997 production of the musical Sophisticated Ladies, for which she received a Dora Mavor Moore Award nomination. In 2010 she wrote and performed an autobiographical musical show titled The Guide to Being Fabulous After You've Skinned Your Knee at the Berkeley Street Theater in Toronto.

For much of her career Caldwell did not publicly disclose that she was a trans woman, describing the experience of living in stealth as one of persistent fear. In 2017 she publicly came out as trans after being cast in the lead role of the play Charm, which was based on the life of Black trans woman Gloria Allen. Her performance and public disclosure were widely noted. Caldwell subsequently discussed her decades of living in stealth, as well as her life as an openly trans woman, in the 2020 documentary Disclosure: Trans Lives on Screen.
