About

Samuel Shipman (1883 – February 9, 1937) was an American playwright and Broadway book writer born in New York, New York. Of Jewish heritage, Shipman built a career as a prolific dramatist whose work spanned several decades of American theater.

Shipman wrote frequently in collaboration with other playwrights. His partnership with John B. Hymer produced several works, including East is West (1918), Crime, and Scarlet Pages (1929). He also co-wrote The Woman in Room 13 (1919) with Max Marcin and Percival Wilde, and collaborated with Aaron Hoffman on Friendly Enemies. Among his solo credits were Lawful Larceny (1922), Creoles (1927), Trapped (1928), Fast Life (1928), She Means Business (1931), Alley Cat (1934), and A Lady Detained (1935). His Broadway credits further include Crooked Gamblers, The Crooked Square, Behind Red Lights (1937), and Cheaper to Marry. The posthumous production Louisiana Lady (1947), based on his earlier play Creoles, appeared a decade after his death.

A number of Shipman's stage works were adapted for the screen. Lawful Larceny was filmed twice, in 1923 and again in 1930. The Woman in Room 13 was adapted in 1920, and Friendly Enemies received two film versions, in 1925 and 1942. Additional adaptations included Cheaper to Marry (1925), Fast Life (1929), Scarlet Pages (1930), The Pay-Off (1929) — based on his play Crime — and Manhattan Parade (1931). Shipman also visited the Lakewood Theater in Maine alongside John B. Hymer.
