About

Sam Rockwell is an American actor born on November 5, 1968, in Daly City, California. The only child of actors Pete Rockwell and Penny Hess, he was raised by his father in San Francisco following his parents' divorce when he was five, and spent summers with his mother in New York City. At age ten, he made a brief stage appearance as Humphrey Bogart in an East Village improv comedy sketch alongside his mother. He began high school at the Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts, where his classmates included Margaret Cho and Aisha Tyler, before completing his diploma at Urban Pioneers, an Outward Bound-style alternative school that helped renew his interest in performing. After appearing in an independent film during his senior year, he relocated to New York to pursue acting and later trained in the Professional Actor Training Program at the William Esper Studio.

Rockwell's screen career began with a debut role in the horror film Clownhouse in 1989. Through the early 1990s, he took on guest spots in television series including The Equalizer, NYPD Blue, and Law and Order, while also appearing in films such as Last Exit to Brooklyn and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. During this period he supported himself working as a restaurant busboy, a bicycle burrito delivery person, and briefly as a private detective's assistant. A Miller commercial in 1994 allowed him to pursue acting full-time. That same year he appeared as the title character in The Search for One-eye Jimmy. The 1996 film Box of Moonlight, directed by Tom DiCillo, marked a turning point, bringing him attention from casting agents and audiences following screenings at Sundance. His performance in the 1997 film Lawn Dogs, in which he played a working-class lawn mower who befriends a wealthy ten-year-old girl in a Kentucky gated community, earned him Best Actor honors at both the Montreal World Film Festival and the Catalan International Film Festival.

Rockwell's profile continued to rise with his portrayal of the deranged prisoner William "Wild Bill" Wharton in the Stephen King prison drama The Green Mile in 1999, the same year he appeared in the science fiction parody Galaxy Quest and played Francis Flute in A Midsummer Night's Dream. He played the gregarious villain Eric Knox in Charlie's Angels in 2000. His leading role as Gong Show host Chuck Barris in George Clooney's directorial debut Confessions of a Dangerous Mind in 2002 was widely praised. He followed that with a role opposite Nicolas Cage in Ridley Scott's Matchstick Men in 2003 and played Zaphod Beeblebrox in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in 2005. In 2007 he appeared as Charley Ford in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, alongside Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck. He starred in Snow Angels in 2008 opposite Kate Beckinsale, and appeared in Iron Man 2 in 2010 as Tony Stark's rival weapons developer Justin Hammer. Additional film credits include Seven Psychopaths (2012), Jojo Rabbit (2019), The Bad Guys (2022), See How They Run (2022), and The Bad Guys 2 (2025).

Rockwell won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of a troubled police officer in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri in 2017. He received a second nomination in the same category for playing George W. Bush in the political satire Vice in 2018. His performance as Bob Fosse in the 2019 miniseries Fosse/Verdon earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination, and in 2025 his role in the third season of the HBO anthology series The White Lotus brought him a second Primetime Emmy Award nomination.

On Broadway, Rockwell has been active from 2003 to 2022. His stage credits include The 24 Hour Plays 2003, The 24 Hour Plays 2004, and A Behanding in Spokane. He starred in Fool for Love and in the Broadway revival of American Buffalo, the latter earning him a Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play in 2022.
