About

Sally Anne Struthers, born July 28, 1947, in Portland, Oregon, is an American actress, voice performer, and activist whose career has spanned television, film, and Broadway. She is the second daughter of Margaret Caroline Struthers, a contract auditor at Bonneville Power Administration, and Robert Alden Struthers, a surgeon originally from Manchester, New Hampshire. Her father left the family when Struthers was approximately nine years old, after which she was raised by her mother in the Concordia neighborhood of northeast Portland. Her mother was a first-generation American of Norwegian descent. Struthers has an older sister, Susan, as well as a half-sister and two half-brothers through her father. She was raised Lutheran and graduated from Grant High School in 1965, subsequently relocating to Los Angeles to study at the Pasadena Playhouse College of Theatre Arts.

Struthers entered the entertainment industry in 1970 as a regular performer and dancer on both The Smothers Brothers Summer Show and The Tim Conway Comedy Hour. That same year she made her feature film debut in a bit part in The Phynx before taking a supporting role in Bob Rafelson's Five Easy Pieces, starring Jack Nicholson. In 1971 she began voicing a teenage Pebbles Flintstone on The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show, a role she held through 1972. She subsequently appeared as the wife of a veterinarian in Sam Peckinpah's thriller The Getaway (1972), alongside Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw.

Her most prominent early role came in 1971 when she was cast as Gloria Stivic, daughter of Archie and Edith Bunker, on Norman Lear's sitcom All in the Family. Producer Lear had noticed Struthers dancing on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. She remained with the series for eight seasons, with her final appearance airing on March 19, 1978. For the role, Struthers received five Primetime Emmy Award nominations and four Golden Globe Award nominations, winning the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series twice, in 1972 and 1979. Despite her affection for the show, she was dissatisfied with the static nature of Gloria's character and made an unsuccessful legal attempt to exit her contract after the fifth season, spending $40,000 in legal fees in the effort. She was also prevented from accepting a lead role in John Schlesinger's The Day of the Locust (1975) when Lear declined to release her from her contract.

Following All in the Family, Struthers appeared in the spin-off Archie Bunker's Place from 1979 to 1982 and then starred in the short-lived spin-off Gloria from 1982 to 1983, in which her character had become a divorcée working as an assistant at an animal clinic run by a character played by Burgess Meredith. In 1976 she portrayed Bess Houdini opposite Paul Michael Glaser in the television biopic The Great Houdini, and in 1977 she played a physically abused housewife opposite Dennis Weaver in the made-for-TV film Intimate Strangers, one of the first network features to address domestic violence. From 1986 to 1988 she portrayed Marsha McMurray on the sitcom 9 to 5. She continued extensive voice work, lending her talents to Hanna-Barbera productions including Yo Yogi!, Droopy Master Detective, and TaleSpin, as well as the ABC series Dinosaurs, which ran from 1991 to 1994. From 2000 to 2007 she played Babette Dell on Gilmore Girls, and she also held a recurring role as Louise, Bill Miller's mother, on Still Standing. Since 2024 she has played Virginia Foldau on the Netflix series A Man on the Inside.

Struthers maintained an active Broadway career between 1981 and 2013. She starred as Florence Ungar in the female version of The Odd Couple from 1985 to 1986, a production in which Rita Moreno was eventually replaced by Brenda Vaccaro. Her Broadway credits also include the play Cafe, Hello, Dolly!, and Annie. In addition to her performance work, Struthers has served for many years as a spokesperson and activist for the Christian Children's Fund, later renamed ChildFund, advocating on behalf of impoverished children in developing countries.
