About
Sally Murphy is an American actress and singer born in 1962 and originally from the Auburn Gresham neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The only child of Edward Murphy, an electrician, and Pat Murphy, a social worker, she began performing informally as a child, doing skits with neighborhood friends and studying piano. She appeared in school productions during junior high school and took on starring roles in musical and theatrical performances at Lincoln-Way High School in New Lenox, graduating in 1980. She went on to major in voice at Northwestern University, completing her degree in 1984.
Following her graduation, Murphy worked in Chicago theater, including with the Goodman Theatre in 1986. In 1989 she joined Steppenwolf Theatre Company's production of The Grapes of Wrath, playing Rose of Sharon opposite Steppenwolf co-founder Gary Sinise as Tom Joad and Lois Smith as Ma Joad. The production transferred to La Jolla Playhouse and London's National Theatre before opening at the Cort Theatre on Broadway in 1990, marking her Broadway debut. She also appeared in the television adaptation of the play for the PBS series American Playhouse in 1991. Murphy has been a Steppenwolf ensemble member since 1993, and her credits with the company span decades, including The Common Pursuit (1988), Skylight (1997), Uncle Vanya (2001), Mother Courage and Her Children (2001), The Royal Family (2002), August: Osage County (2007), Sex with Strangers (2011), Time Stands Still (2012), The Minutes (2017), and Linda Vista (2017).
On Broadway, Murphy played Julie Jordan in the 1994 revival of Carousel, with Audra McDonald appearing alongside her as Carrie Pipperidge. Her subsequent Broadway credits include The Wild Party (2000), Fiddler on the Roof (2004), August: Osage County (2007), Linda Vista (2019), and The Minutes (2022). Her off-Broadway work has also been notable. In 2001 at the Vineyard Theatre, she portrayed Susan Smith in Cornelius Eady's Brutal Imagination, a two-character play centered on the real-life 1994 case of a white woman from South Carolina who falsely accused an African American man of kidnapping her two young sons, whom she had drowned herself. Joe Morton played the imaginary Black man Smith invented to deflect blame. Murphy and Morton reunited in 2025 for a one-night reading of the piece, with proceeds benefiting the Innocence Project. Murphy was also nominated for the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Musical in 2015 for her portrayal of Jenny in The Threepenny Opera.
Murphy's interest in bringing work to Steppenwolf extended beyond performing. After seeing the play Skylight at London's National Theatre in 1995, she advocated for Steppenwolf to produce it, drawn to its dramatic depiction of a relationship and the demands of its lead role. The company staged the play in 1997 with Murphy as Kyra Hollis. She also appeared in The Apple Family plays, playing Jane Apple in Regular Singing in 2013 and reprising the role in a Zoom format in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic theater closures.
In addition to her stage work, Murphy appeared in several films and television productions between 1992 and 2001, including Scent of a Woman (1992), Fearless (1993), the HBO film If These Walls Could Talk (1996), Charming Billy (1999), and Pollock (2001). On television, she appeared in the 1993 television film Victim of Love: The Shannon Mohr Story.
