About
Sally Eaton (born April 6, 1947, in Illinois) is an American actress, singer, and Wiccan high priestess. She is known for creating and originating the role of Jeannie in both the off-Broadway and Broadway productions of the musical Hair, and for her subsequent work in blues singing, theater, and Neo-Pagan religious practice.
Eaton's most prominent stage credit is Hair, in which she appeared in the original off-Broadway production and the 1968 Broadway production. Her performance as Jeannie was an originating role, and she appeared on both the original off-Broadway cast recording released by RCA in 1967 and the Broadway cast album released by RCA in 1968. During the 1970s, she was a member of Doric Wilson's theater company TOSOS (The Other Side of Silence), through which she acted in Wilson's plays Now She Dances! and Street Theater. Following her Broadway career, Eaton sang the blues professionally.
Her recording work extended beyond the Hair cast albums. She appeared on the Farewell American Tour album released on Paramount Records in 1971, and released several singles on Paramount Records, including "Breathin is Believin" backed with "I Can Afford," "Charlotte's in Trouble" backed with "I Don't Want to Need You Anymore," and "Once Before You Go" backed with "Long Time Lover." She also appeared on Starwood Memories II, released on ACE Tapes in 1988, and on Another Country, a collaborative album with Bill Ring and Peter Pasco.
In the mid-1970s, Eaton relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area, where she became a third degree priestess in the New Reformed Orthodox Order of the Golden Dawn. She practiced within the West Coast craft tradition and participated in the California revival of Ordo Templi Orientis. Her religious and magical work spans Golden Dawn and Ordo Templi Orientis traditions as well as Wiccan and Druidic practices. She contributed to an early Ar nDraiocht Fein ritual and published the music and lyrics for the album Avalon is Rising. Eaton has presented lectures, rituals, and performances at Neo-Pagan events.
