Sally Bynum

Sally Bynum was the stage name of Sara Delma Byron, an American dancer and actress born on July 31, 1913, in Weakley County, Tennessee. She died on May 29, 2006. Byron also performed under the names Sally Bynam and Brook Byron, and it was under the latter name that she played Sally Cato MacDougall in Auntie Mame.

The daughter of Sam and Minnie Pearl Harris Bynum, Byron grew up in Akron, Ohio, where she attended Garfield High School. She enrolled at Murray College but left after one year to pursue a career in dance, joining a touring company called The Band Box Revue. She subsequently worked as a model, appearing on magazine covers and drawing interest from the film industry. In 1936, 20th Century Fox offered her a stock contract.

Byron's Broadway career spanned work in both musicals and revues. Performing as Sally Bynum, she appeared in the musical Roberta in 1933 and the revue Life Begins at 8:40 in 1934. She returned to Broadway in later years, appearing in Up in Central Park in 1945 and The Leading Lady in 1948.

Beyond the stage, Byron worked extensively in radio and television. She portrayed Diane Pers in the radio soap opera Kate Hopkins, Angel of Mercy, and appeared on television programs including The Untouchables, Richard Diamond Private Detective, and M Squad.
