About

Sallie Fisher (August 10, 1880 – June 8, 1950) was an American actress who worked in stage, vaudeville, and silent film, with a Broadway career spanning from 1902 to 1921. Born on a ranch in Wyoming, she relocated with her family to Salt Lake City at a young age and received her education from private tutors. She launched her performing career with the Salt Lake Opera Company before advancing through the chorus of a comic opera company in Chicago to the position of prima donna.

Fisher made her Broadway debut in 1902, portraying Flora in the musical The Billionaire. Over the following years she became associated with the Dillingham theatrical organization, a connection noted by The Washington Post in 1907, which described her as having served as prima donna in the Dillingham forces for several seasons. Her Broadway credits included starring roles in Stubborn Cinderella, in which she appeared alongside John Barrymore, and A Knight for a Day. She also appeared in The Choir Rehearsal, Chinese Love, and Watch Your Step, among additional productions spanning musical comedy, operetta, revue, and fantasy formats. She performed as well with George M. Cohan in 45 Minutes from Broadway.

Beyond Broadway, Fisher appeared in regional productions, including a 1910 staging of The Goddess of Liberty in St. Louis, Missouri. A critic for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch wrote that Fisher was responsible for most of the show's appeal, citing her singing, dancing, and stage presence. In 1916 she appeared in the silent film The Little Shepherd of Bargain Row.

Fisher married Arthur Houghton, a theatrical manager, and the two remained together for 37 years. Following their marriage, she retired from performing at the height of her career. She died of a heart attack on June 8, 1950, at her home in Twentynine Palms, California, at the age of 69.
