About
Ruth Jean MacTammany (1892–1977) was an American actress, singer, and screenwriter who also performed under the names Jeanne Iver and Ruth Rishel. Born in Akron, Ohio, she built a career that spanned stage, screen, and writing.
MacTammany's film work was concentrated in 1917, when she appeared in One Day and The Girl From Rectors. That same year she wrote the screen adaptation of Alma, Where Do You Live?, adapting the work from an existing play, and also appeared in Where Do You Live?. A film company was named in her honor during this period of her career.
Her stage career brought her to Broadway in 1919, when she appeared in the musical The Lady in Red. Prior to that production, MacTammany had been performing in Europe when World War I began. She was arrested on suspicion of espionage before ultimately being released, and she subsequently served as an ambulance driver. Her wartime experiences were later recounted in newspaper coverage.
MacTammany married twice. In legal proceedings, she testified that she had performed at the Tangier Club, an establishment owned by her husband and his family, and stated that it operated as a reputable venue.
