About

Russell Hornsby is an American actor born on May 15, 1974, in San Francisco, California. He attended St. Mary's College High School in Berkeley, California, where he competed in football and track before auditioning for a spring musical production and being cast as the Scarecrow in The Wiz. That experience drew him toward theater, and he went on to study performance at Boston University, earning a degree upon graduation. He subsequently continued his training at the British American Drama Academy in Oxford.

Following his studies, Hornsby relocated to New York City, where he took on leading roles in Off-Broadway productions including To Kill a Mockingbird, in which he played Atticus Finch, Joe Louis Blues, and Six Degrees of Separation, in which he portrayed Paul. In 2000, his performance in the Off-Broadway production of Jitney earned him both a Drama Desk Award and an Obie Award. He made his Broadway debut in 2010, appearing in Fences.

In the late 1990s, Hornsby shifted his focus toward television and film by moving to Los Angeles. His early television work included recurring roles on Haunted as Detective Marcus Bradshaw and on Gideon's Crossing as Chief Resident Dr. Aaron Boise, along with appearances on Grey's Anatomy, Law & Order, and In Justice. He also portrayed running back Leon Taylor in ESPN's drama series Playmakers. His film credits from this period include Meet the Parents, Big Fat Liar, After the Sunset, and Get Rich or Die Tryin', among others.

Hornsby gained wider recognition through several prominent television roles. He played Edward "Eddie" Sutton on ABC Family's Lincoln Heights and Luke on the HBO drama In Treatment. From 2011 to 2017, he starred as Detective Hank Griffin in the NBC fantasy drama Grimm. He later appeared as Carl Gatewood in the Showtime series The Affair and as Isaiah Butler in the Netflix crime drama Seven Seconds in 2018. That same year, he joined the cast of Creed II. In 2021, he took on the role of Charles Flenory in the Starz crime drama BMF, alongside costars Eric Kofi-Abrefa, Da'Vinchi, and Demetrius Flenory Jr. His stage role in Fences was also adapted for film, in which he portrayed Lyons.
