About

William Russell Hardie was born on May 20 or May 21, 1904, in Griffins Mills or Buffalo, New York, the son of William and Katherine Hardie. He died on July 21, 1973, in Clarence, New York, at age 69. A stage and film actor whose Broadway career spanned from 1929 to 1961, Hardie appeared in productions including A Streetcar Named Desire, The Andersonville Trial, Midgie Purvis, Love Me Long, and Harvest of Years.

Hardie's upbringing placed him near the Roycroft community, where exposure to various craftspeople shaped his early sense of vocation. His father worked as a blacksmith, and Hardie initially left school to assist him, but his father eventually encouraged him to pursue a different path given the declining demand for blacksmithing in Buffalo. Hardie returned to education through night school, studying shorthand and stenography, which led to clerical work at the Erie Railroad's freight offices, first as a stenographer and later as an office boy and then a full secretary. He subsequently took a position at a Ford plant before losing that job. His introduction to acting came through a small role in a play while he was employed as a secretary for a stock theater company. After that company folded two years later, he spent a period selling vacuum cleaners.

Hardie eventually relocated to New York City with eighty-five dollars borrowed from his mother. Once those funds were exhausted, he secured work with a stock theater company and went on to perform with stock troupes in Kansas City, Missouri; Memphis, Tennessee; and Greenwich, Connecticut. His Broadway debut came in The Criminal Code, which ran eight months in New York City and an additional three months on tour. He continued working in theater through 1961, accumulating credits across drama and other stage productions.

Alongside his stage work, Hardie appeared in twenty-seven films between 1930 and 1966. His screen credits included an uncredited role in Camille in 1936 and the role of a Pentagon general in Fail Safe in 1964.
