About
Russell Bassett (October 24, 1845 – May 8, 1918) was an American actor who worked in both stage and silent film. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he relocated to Oakland, California at the age of three after his father took up mining. He received his education at Brayton College in Oakland, an institution that no longer exists, and it was there that he first engaged with acting.
Bassett built his early professional stage career through stock theater, working with the Hooley Stock Company in Chicago. He subsequently toured extensively across the United States, developing his craft over many years before reaching Broadway. His Broadway career spanned from 1905 to 1910 and included three productions: Rip Van Winkle (1905), The Top o' th' World (1907), and The Other Fellow (1910).
Following his stage work, Bassett transitioned into silent film and appeared in 76 films between 1911 and 1918. During that period he worked with numerous production companies, among them Biograph, Edison, Yankee, Pathe, Imp, Reliance, Nestor, and Famous Players.
In his personal life, Bassett was married and had a son. He died on May 8, 1918, from a cerebral hemorrhage at his home in New York City.
