About
Russel Mthembu is a South African performer and a member of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the South African choral group founded in 1960 by Joseph Shabalala. Born in Ladysmith, South Africa, Mthembu joined the ensemble in 1976, contributing as a bass voice alongside Jabulani Dubazana, who performed as a tenor. His entry into the group coincided with Shabalala's conversion to Christianity, a development that shaped the ensemble's musical direction toward Zulu hymns and religiously themed material. Mthembu has been a full-time member of the group since the 1980s, and Shabalala is described as a close friend.
Mthembu made his Broadway debut in 1993 in The Song of Jacob Zulu. The production earned the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Music in a Play that same year, an honor in which Mthembu shared as a credited Broadway performer on the production.
